Stop Sweatshop Labor Exploitation!

Sweatshop labor is work that's done in an environment of exploitation. In sweatshops, workers are underpaid, overworked, and abused.

Most people like to think that sweatshops are a thing of the past, that when labor unions came into being, worker exploitation became a thing of the past.

Unfortunately, while some fair labor standards exist within the United States, they hardly exist at all in some other countries. Big corporations that used to exploit workers here in the United States have now taken their production overseas. That's right - these corporations are so dedicated to squeezing as much profit out of workers as possible that they're willing to leave the United States in order to do it - or hire some other company outside the United States to do their dirty work for them. It's called sweatshop outsourcing, and it's an immoral business practice.

This lens focuses on the practice of sweatshop labor, and on the work of those who are doing what they can to revitalize the sweatshop-free economy here in the United States.

No Sweat Apparel Bad for the Environment - Choose American Apparel Instead

Dependence on fossil fuel pollution makes No Sweat Apparel a dirty company

It's a real disappointment to find out the truth about No Sweat Apparel. Not at all the small, friendly operation they create the image of being, No Sweat Apparel is actually part of a big multinational corporation that is willing to use nasty tactics to pick on the little guy.

Furthermore, as we think about buing ethical clothing, we need also to think about more than just labor conditions. Social consciousness needs to focus on the growing crisis of global warming and the pollution of our atmosphere... by businesses like No Sweat Apparel.

You see, one thing that No Sweat Apparel cannot tell you is that its shirts are made in the USA. They're aren't. No Sweat Apparel has outsourced jobs that could be held by Americans, turning its back on American workers. No Sweat Apparel has its clothing made through outsourcing in factories in places like Bangladesh and Indonesia.

Bangladesh and Indonesia are not known for the environmental friendliness of their factories, but No Sweat Apparel doesn't have to follow American environmental regulations with the factories it gets its clothes from, because they're outside the United States.

Furthermore, every single shirt from No Sweat Apparel is transported from the far side of the planet using polluting fossil fuels. Every time you buy from No Sweat Apparel, you help make global warming WORSE. That makes No Sweat Apparel a very unethical choice.

Almost no economic activity is free of impact upon the environment, but we can make good relative choices. Take, for example, the shirts sold on Skreened, or the organic shirts you see for sale below. They're from American Apparel, which makes all of its clothes right here in the United States.
