Treatment and Remedies
For individuals suffering from sweaty palms, a commonly used remedy is the anti-perspirant. These anti-perspirants often contain an aluminium based chemical formulation such as aluminium chloride that can help block the overactive sweat glands, preventing sweat from surfacing out. However, over-the-counter antiperspirant is usually not very effective in controlling excessive hand sweating and may require stronger, prescriptive solutions with a much higher concentration of aluminum chloride such as DrysolIf excessive sweaty hands cannot be effective controlled by antiperspirants, some doctors may prescribe anticholinergic medications to help stop the heavy sweating. Several of these drugs that have shown promise include Oxybutynin, Ditropan XL, Robinul, Probanthine and Cogentin. However such oral medications can sometimes interfere with other body functions causing some side effects which include drowsiness, visual symptoms and dryness in the mouth and other mucus membranes.
For cases of excessive hand sweating that is diagnosed to be related to psychological issues such as anxiety, stress, depression or nervousness, antidepressants may be prescribed to help treat palmar hyperhidrosis. However these medications can have similar side effects as anticholinergic drugs therefore consult with your family doctor to find out more before using these oral medications.
Another possible cure for preventing sweaty hands is with Botox treatment. This treatment for sweaty palms became popular in the medical arena about a few years ago and involves injecting neurotoxins around the palms to paralyze the function of the nerves in the area, thereby temporarily stopping the hand from sweating.
While the use of Botox as a treatment to cure sweaty hands have been proven effective, it is only a temporary solution. Repeated treatments will be required every 4 to 7 months to contol the same sweaty problem. Furthermore, the high cost for each treatment could also be a key drawback as the entire process could run up to a few thousands dollars.
Iontophoresis is another effective alternative treatment to help stop excessive hands sweating. Many people who suffer from either sweaty palms or feet have seen great results with iontophoresis treatment. With iontophoresis, it can drastically reduce excessive hand sweating to the barest minimal. The procedure involves placing both hands into two trays of water where a mild electric current is pass through the positively- and negatively-charged trays to stop sweating. This routine is repeated for at least 5 days and thereafter, every 3 week until sweating is reduced to a comfortable level.
Recognised by the International Hyperhidrosis Society as an effective cure for sweaty palms, Iontophoresis machines can be purchased for self treatment at home. There are no known side effects and is proven to be 100% effective.
