Sweden - a Scandinavian country in northern Europe

Ranked #3,324 in Travel & Places, #105,673 overall

Sweden, a Kingdom in Scandinavia

Sweden, officially the Kingdom of Sweden or Sverige, is a Nordic country on the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe. It has borders with Norway (west and north) and Finland (northeast), and is connected to Denmark (south) by the Oresund Bridge. It has been a member of the European Union since January 1, 1995. Its capital city is Stockholm.

At 449,964 km² (173,720 square miles), Sweden is the third largest country by area in Western Europe (after France and Spain) and fifth in all of Europe. Sweden has a low population density of 20 people per square kilometre, except in its metropolitan areas; 84% of the population lives in urban areas, which comprise only 1.3% of the country's total land area and are much more dense than the countryside at about 1,300 people per square kilometre (3,400 per square mile). Most Swedes speak Swedish as their mother tongue. In Sweden live about 9 114 000 people.

The modern name Sweden is derived through back-formation from Old English Sweoðeod, which meant "people of the Swedes" (Old Norse Svíþjóð, Latin Suetidi). This word is derived from Sweon/Sweonas (Old Norse Sviar, Latin Suiones). The Swedish name Sverige literally means "Realm of the Swedes", excluding the Geats in Götaland.

The Kingdom Sweden

has a King

Modern Sweden emerged out of the Kalmar Union formed in 1397, and by the unification of the country by King Gustav Vasa in the 16th century. In the 17th century the country expanded its territories to form the Swedish empire. Most of the conquered territories outside the Scandinavian Peninsula, were lost during the 18th and 19th centuries. The historically integrated eastern half of Sweden, Österland, was lost to Russia in 1809 to become the Grand duchy of Finland of Imperial Russia. The last war in which Sweden was directly involved was in 1814, when Sweden by military means forced Norway into a personal union with Sweden, a union which lasted until 1905. Since that, Sweden has been at peace.

Carl XVI Gustav is King in Sweden today. He became king September 1973 after his Grandfather King Gustaf.
In February 2009 the Crown princess was officially engaged to her boyfriend since 7 years, Daniel Westling.

Economy facts

from Wikipedia

Sweden has a long history of economic freedom, such as support for property rights, free trade and free immigration. Sweden has long been a major exporter of iron, copper and timber. Improved transportation and communication has allowed for the large scale utilization of remote natural assets, most notably timber and iron ore. Sweden has a rich supply of water power, but lacks significant oil and coal deposits. In the 1890s, universal schooling and industrialization enabled the country to develop a successful manufacturing industry. Sweden had the world's 5th highest GDP per capita in 1970. After the World War II Sweden emerged as a Nordic model welfare state, increasing taxes and regulation, until the economy crashed in the early 1990s. As a response to the economic decline it experienced in a few decades, the country has made some economic reforms. Sweden has high civil liberties and high economic freedoms in many areas, such as excellent judiciary and some of the world's leading privatization programs. On the other hand, it has a heavy tax burden and inflexible labor market, with overall ranking 27th on the Index of Economic Freedom 2008. Sweden joined the European Union in 1995, but so far has stayed outside defense cooperation and eurozone. Sweden achieves many excellent results in international comparisons such as the UN Human Development Index (HDI). The GDP per capita ranking is 15th.

Sweden on top of the lists

Northern Europe tops ICT developments
ICT Developments in the world
The Index combines 11 indicators into a single measure that can be used as a benchmarking tool globally, regionally and at the country level. These are related to ICT access, use and skills, such as households with a computer the number of Internet users; and literacy levels.

The most advanced countries in ICT are from Northern Europe. The exception is the Republic of Korea. Sweden tops the new ITU ICT Development Index, followed by the Republic of Korea, Denmark, the Netherlands, Iceland and Norway. They are followed by other, mainly high-income countries from Europe, Asia and North America. Western and Northern Europe and North America are the regions with the highest IDI scores, and most countries from these regions are among the top twenty ICT economies. Poor countries, in particular the least developed countries, remain at the lower end of the index with limited access to ICT infrastructure, including fixed and mobile telephony, Internet and broadband.

The Swedes and internet

It is probably world record

90% of Swedens population are connected to internet. The Swedish children use internet from 6 years and up. The schools in Sweden allow the pupils to work online.

Over 6 millions posted the tax declaration via internet or SMS!

Only 7% of the Swedes are online through a telephone modem. The rest of us have cable or wireless. The Tax declaration this year was made mainly through internet or SMS. 750 individuals over 100 years of age used it. The goal of the government this year was that 60% of the whole population used electronic ways.

They found a number of extraordinary ones, ranging from a castle filled with family treasures to a little wood-built farm, a forgotten artist's studio built on a cliff by the Baltic, and the house in which Astrid Lindgren, the creator of Pippi Longstocking, was born. Ubiquitous silver-grey floorboards and pastel-coloured furniture are typical of the magnificent castles and manor houses of Sweden. With texts and poetry in praise of the land of the midnight sun, and photographs that capture its romance, this book has all the seductive power of its subject.

Swedish Designer Sigvard Bernadotte

You have to click on the cuttlery to see how many different items there are in this same design! When I was a little girl, I had my own knife, fork and spoon of this design.

Many of Sigvard Bernadotte's silverworks look deceptively easy to execute, but in reality, the simplicity of his design requires perfect tools combined with an extremely high degree of accuracy of the experienced Georg Jensen silversmiths. Bernadotte's ascetic candlesticks with no other decoration than the lines of the flutings are examples of his elegantly simplified but personal style. The sophisticated flatware pattern named Bernadotte from 1939 enhances the beauty of the utilitarian articles and possesses both a modern and a solid look. The stringent and aristocratic expression of its channelled handles epitomizes the characteristics of a Bernadotte's refined sense of style and the design is still one of the Georg Jensen's most popular flatware patterns.

The Vikings

A long time back

The Vikings sailed most of the North Atlantic, reaching south to North Africa and east to Russia, Constantinople and the middle east, as looters, traders, colonists, and mercenaries. Vikings under Leif Eriksson, heir to Erik the Red, reached North America, and set up a short lived settlement in present-day L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

The Swedish Viking Age lasted roughly between the eighth and eleventh centuries CE. During this period, it is believed that the Swedes expanded from eastern Sweden and incorporated the Geats to the south. While Vikings from what is today Norway, Denmark and the west coast and south of Sweden travelled south and west, Swedish vikings and Gutar travelled east and south, going to Finland, the Baltic countries, Russia, the Mediterranean and further as far as Baghdad. Their routes passed the rivers of Russia down south to Constantinople (Byzantine Empire) (present-day Istanbul, Turkey) on which they did numerous raids. The Byzantine Emperor Theophilos noticed their great skills in war, and invited them to serve as his personal bodyguard, these were called the varangian guard. The Swedish vikings are believed to have taken great part in the creation of Russia. The adventures of these Swedish Vikings are commemorated on many rune stones in Sweden, such as the Greece Runestones and the Varangian Runestones. There was also considerable participation in expeditions westwards, which are commorated on stones such as the England Runestones. The last major Swedish Viking expedition appears to have been the ill-fated expedition of Ingvar the Far-Travelled to Serkland, the region south-east of the Caspian Sea. Its members are commemorated on the Ingvar Runestones, none of which mentions any survivor.

It is not known when and how the kingdom of Sweden was born, but the list of Swedish monarchs is drawn from the first kings who ruled Svealand (Sweden) and Götaland (Gothia) as one with Erik the Victorious. Sweden and Gothia were two separate nations long before that. It is not known how long they existed, Beowulf described semi-legendary Swedish-Geatish wars in the sixth century CE.

A landmark among historical novels, Kristin Lavransdatter is part of the body of work that won Sigrid Undset the Nobel Prize for 1928. This trilogy of more than one thousand pages follows its title character through her life in fourteenth-century Scandinavia. It is a novel full of big and dramatic happenings: romantic intrigues, political schemes, and spiritual debates. It is also a novel about one woman's life. Sigrid Undset makes us understand Kristin's love for her sons and husband, the feeling of milk in her breasts, and the hard work of living in the fourteenth century. As does any good historical novel, Kristin Lavransdatter immerses us in its time through rich details concerning dress and manners as well as social and historical events. The multitude of character names is confusing at first, but if you stick with it, Sigrid Undset will give you a first-hand experience of another world.

My Grandmother introduced me to this book years ago by her use of it to make her annual batches of Swedish Pepparkakkor and Swedish Spritz cookies. She would (and still does) make them every December to those who are lucky enough to receive these yummy cookies! She uses this recipe, but instead of rolling out the Pepparkakkor cookies, she spreads them out in flat layers using a cookie press. The cookies are easy to make and lots of fun to decorate for kids and adults.

She also uses this book to make Swedish meatballs that are always a favorite of all who come to her annual holiday party! Everyone who tries them looks forward to her making them again next year!!

The Swedish ice hockey team

The Swedish Hockey team is GOOD! Just have a look at all these Swedes in NHL. How is Detroit doing right now? - They have the Swedish players to thank a lot.

Sweden won the Olympic Games Gold Medal 2006.

The Gold Medal winning goal was very nice to see, especially since three of Sweden´s best
players ever were involved in the operation. Mats Sundin was handling the face off in neutral
zone and puck went away from him and then Peter Forsberg took it and went into Finlands
zone and dropped the puck back to Sundin. He dropped it back to Nicklas Lidström who immediately took a magnific shot which went into the net in the upper left corner of the Finnish goal. This precision in the shot was extremely good and Nicklas Lidström really deserved this success.

The Olympic Games directorate named Kenny Jönsson best defencemen in the tournament.

Wild Wolf in Sweden

Wild Animals of Sweden

There are many - I will just mention a few

Brown bear
The brown bear is Sweden's biggest predator, weighing anything up to 350 kg. It eats berries and juicy shrubs and ants, but it also hunts voles and catches salmon, and, given the chance, is capable of killing bigger animals too. It hibernates every winter. Cubs are born every two or three years.

Eagle Owl
The eagle owl (Bubo bubo) is the largest and heaviest of European owls. Its deep, resonant call is audible for several miles, especially during the breeding season in early spring.

Elk/Moose
The elk/moose is the largest mammal in Sweden - the male can weigh up to 500 kg. Its fur is brown to greyish-black, and its long shanks are greyish-white, for which reason a standing elk can be hard to detect among narrow-trunked trees. Sweden has a large elk population and the open season for elk is in the autumn, and quite a large number of animals are shot every year.

European bison
European bison live in herds of 10-30 animals led by an old bull. The preferred habitat is deciduous forests or mixed forests with mainly deciduous trees and open clearings. They are ruminants with four stomachs like dairy cows and they eat mostly grass, herbs, bark and twigs.

Fox
The fox is a canid species and a predator and is found throughout Sweden. It is easily recognized by its red-brown coat and long bushy tail with a white tip. Foxes have keen sight and hearing and they like to hunt at night.

Great Grey Owl
Great grey owls (Strix nebulosa) are one of Sweden's largest owls.

Lynx
The lynx is Sweden's only wild feline. It weighs between 15 and 30 kg; the males are bigger than the females. Like all felines, the lynx is a very skilful hunter. It catches hare, wildfowl and voles, as well as bigger animals like roe-deer and reindeer. The lynx mates in March and its young are born in May.

Northern Hawk Owl
Northern hawk owls (Surnia ulula) nest in tree cavities such as woodpecker holes or in man-made nesting boxes.

Otter
The otter is a species of mustelid that lives on the coast or by lakes or rivers. It may seem clumsy on dry land but in the water it is very agile, being expert at diving and swimming. Otters find most of their food in water. They prefer fish and frogs but also eat crayfish and seabirds.

Rare breeds
Rare breeds are part of our heritage. What we today call rare breeds can be considered as our original Swedish domesticated animals. They have adjusted themselves to poor quality grazing, can survive in a hard climate, are resistant to the illnesses present in Sweden and are good at foraging. The physical appearance of the animals can vary widely - appearance was less important than the ability to survive.

Reindeer
Reindeer are classed as cervids. They vary a good deal in size, but males on average weigh about 100 kg and females about 80 kg. Reindeer live in flocks and every year migrate long distances between summer and winter pastures. Sweden does not have any really wild reindeer: those roaming the Swedish mountains are semi-domesticated animals belonging to the Sami people.

Seals
Seals are mammals that have adapted to a life in water. They have webbed feet like fins and their bodies are spool-shaped. A thick layer of fat insulates them against the cold water in the winter. Their fur is short and dense and they change it every spring. The seals lives in the sea but can survive for a long time on dry land. It is very fond of sunbathing on flat rocks.

Snowy Owl
Snowy owls (Bubo scandiacus) live on the arctic tundra throughout the northern hemisphere.

Wild boar
Wild boars became extinct in Sweden in the 18th century. Wild boars in Sweden today are descendants of animals that escaped from captivity or were released into the wild towards the end of the 20th century. Wild boars are social animals that live in groups consisting of sows and their offspring. Wild boar piglets are striped when they are born. This is good camouflage when they lie in dry grass.

Wolf
The wolf is a gregarious animal, and a wolf pack consists of between ten and fifteen wolves, all of them related - for example, two parents and their offspring. In spring and summer, wolves hunt singly or in pairs. During autumn and winter the pack hunt together so as to bring down bigger and more formidable animals like the elk.

Wolverine
The wolverine is the largest of the mustelidae and can weigh up to 30 kg. In the summer it feeds mainly on mammals and birds, while in the winter it eats reindeer killed by itself or other predators. The species has been protected in Sweden since 1969 and the wolverine is one of Sweden's most threatened species.
