The Story

When Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) starts at a new school and shows an interest in Ali (Elisabeth Shue), he finds himself a target of Ali's ex-boyfriend, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), and the rest of the sadistic students from the Cobra Kai karate dojo, who live by the motto, "Strike first. Strike hard. No mercy."

In an attempt to stop the bullying, Daniel's new neighbor Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) tells the Cobra Kai sensei and students that Daniel, who knows only a few karate moves that he learned at the Y, will compete against the Cobra Kai kids in the All Valley Karate Tournament. Mr. Miyagi then trains Daniel in traditional methods of karate, where discipline, fearlessness, and virtue are as important as kicks and punches.

At the tournament, Daniel advances to the semifinals, where he faces a Cobra Kai student who has been instructed by his corrupt sensei to use an illegal move to take Daniel out of the competition with a knee injury. Daniel refuses to quit, and he faces his rival, Johnny, in the final round.

Johnny's sensei tells him to target Daniel's injury and "sweep the leg." Daniel uses Mr. Miyagi's training to fight through the pain, as he employs the awesome "crane kick" move to take Johnny out with a foot to the face, winning the competition.

The Lyrics

I didn't see it comin'
Creepin' up from behind
I was almost swallowed whole
By the thrill of the fight

It wasn't for the money
And it wasn't just for fun
I wanted to make a mark
I just wanted to be someone

I heard the devil whisper in my ear (uh huh)
He made his message clear when he said
Sweep the leg, Johnny
Sweep the leg, Johnny
Sweep the leg, Johnny
Oh good god now you gotta believe me

It never really mattered
I was always under control
Monkey hear, monkey think
There is no fear in this dojo

I was a super hero
King of 1985
I showed no mercy
I was always Cobra Kai

But I caught a crane kick to the face (uh huh)

I guess he sealed my fate when he said
Sweep the leg, Johnny
Sweep the leg, Johnny
Sweep the leg, Johnny
Oh good god now you gotta believe me

Good god you gotta believe me
Good god, good god
Oh, good god now you gotta believe me
Oh good god now you gotta believe me
Oh good god now you gotta believe me

I heard the devil whisper in my ear
He made his message clear when he said
Sweep the leg, Johnny
Sweep the leg, Johnny
Sweep the leg, Johnny
Oooohoooh

Sweep the leg, Johnny
Sweep the leg, Johnny
Sweep the leg, Johnny
Good god now you gotta believe me

Sweep the leg, Johnny
Sweep the leg
Sweep the leg, Johnny, Johnny
Good god you gotta believe
You got to believe me
