Yes, You Can Make Your Own Baby Food. Simple! Fast!

Making your own baby food does not have to be complicated. Life is crazy enough and most of us with young children are already rushing around with too many priorities on our priority list. We all want what is best for our children and making baby food gives us control over what our children eat and saves us a lot of money in the process.

The steps involved are not complex but if your new to the notion of making baby food, check out my lens "Got a Banana? Then You Can Make Your Own Baby Food!". Bananas are the simplest to start with. On to sweet potatoes...

So, got a sweet potato? Great! Now all you need to do is wash, peel, cook and mush (okay puree if you insist). Do all that and you have officially made your own baby food! It really is that simple.

Okay, so you do have to do some cooking this time unlike preparing fresh bananas or ripe pears. My prefered cooking method is steaming, especially using an electric steamer. The nice thing about electric steamers is most have a timer which you can set and then forget. Though I love to cook, I can not always be strapped to the stove and my electric steamer gives me the freedom to prepare foods and not worry about them while they are cooking.

How Do Your Food Preferences Impact What You Make For Your Kids?

I really am not a sweet potato fan. That may surprise you since I make it for my children (who love them). I have tried to make it a point to prevent my food biases from interfering with what I make and serve for my children...especially vegetables (though you won't see any okra on the table any time soon).

So, got a sweet potato?

Wash it. Peel it. Cut it into chunks. Don't worry about fancy knife skills. Just cut it into about 6-8 pieces and toss into your steamer bowl. I start with 15-20 minutes steaming time. When the timer dings, CAREFULLY remove the cover (so you don't burn yourself on the steam). Take a fork and try to mash a piece of sweet potato against the side wall. If it mashes easily its done...if not add a few minutes and check again.

Mush Mush Mush!

Once the sweet potato is cooked and allowed to cool down, all you have left is to mush (puree) it. You have a few choices here:

(1) food storage bag and your bare hands
(2) food mill
(3) blender
(4) immersion blender
(5) food processor

Whatever your preferred mush method, you want to make sure you mush it thoroughly (unless you are making food for an older child who can handle little soft chunks in the food).

No, you don't need a immersion blender to make baby food but it certainly makes it more fun (from someone who loves kitchen gadgets).

I bought this one since I believe in the Kitchen Aid brand (my family has had Kitchen Aid appliances for years) and it does EVERYTHING! ...not just for making baby food!!

Sweet Potatoes for Baby!

Sweet potatoes can be quite dense so thin them out a bit for younger babies. You can use water, breast milk or formula. Just add and stir until you get the right consistency you are looking for.

You Made Baby Food!

Depending on how much you have made and how much you are going to use right away, you will need to consider storage. I typically freeze what I am not using within a day or two at the most. I recommend a compartment tray of some sort. The least expensive would be an ice cube tray. You probably already have one in your freezer that you can delegate to the task. Or, you can purchase ice cube trays with lids or trays designed just for making baby food. Either way, just fill the wells and freeze (wrap the ice cube tray in plastic wrap). Leave the frozen cubes in the tray for short term storage or pop out and toss in a freezer bag.

Some Trays to Consider
