The Winchester Star - FLAIR 2009: The cake batter is in a holding pattern on the counter still needing that extra half cup of almonds. The icing recipe seems like it's written in a foreign language. And the worse part of the whole nightmare holiday entertaining scenario is that the turkey still needs two hours to cook and people are arriving in 90 minutes. To avoid the stress of juggling cooking time with baking dessert or rolls, two local business owners offer harried hostesses an alternative to the specialized task of holiday - let someone else do it. Cesar Yong, owner of Sweet Sunset Bakery on Jubal Early Drive in Winchester, said it's easier to leave the difficult task of baking a cake, pie, brownies, or bread to the professionals. Instead of cluttering up the kitchen and trying to find the ingredients or the time to bake the rolls and then the dessert, placing an order at a local bakery can alleviate some of the holiday stress of entertaining. In a small town like Winchester, Yong said, many people still like to bake their traditional recipes at home. However, when time becomes an issue and finding the ingredients to a specialized cake seem impossible it's time to ask for help. "If it's a special occasion and you have family coming in . . . you want to give them something special that they'll remember," he said. "You will finish all of my cake, and everyone will be talking about it." Joyce McDaniel, owner of The Sweet Tooth Bakery in Winchester, said the cost of paying someone to bake a cake or other dessert is almost equal to the time invested in the creation of the dessert and the cost of the ingredients. And, she said, if you pay a professional to make it, you know it will taste good. If a person wants to bake at home it might take a couple hours or more to complete the task, McDaniel said, however, it only takes a couple of minutes to order something. A hostess "can spend more time on things that don't require specialized skills," she said. A bakery, McDaniel said, can also make specialized cakes with fillings, unique icings, and decorations. "The biggest thing is decorated cakes," she said. The Sweet Tooth Bakery has several 3-D cakes people to create a unique memory, she said. The cakes stand on their own in the shape of the object. In keeping with the holiday-themed season, McDaniel said hostesses can wow their guests with a 3-D turkey, Santa, or elf. "Why have flowers when you can have a cake as a centerpiece?" she said. Or, if not a cake, said Yong, his store can do pies and other pastries. For Thanksgiving pumpkin-flavored cheesecakes and pumpkin rolls would be a good choice. Sweet Sunset Bakery will also bake rolls and breads for dinner parties, he said. In addition to using a bakery to augment the family dinner, McDaniel suggested people think of using a professional for the company holiday party. Decorated sugar cookies and brownies or a cake from a local bakery may go a long way to impress people at the annual party. Yong agreed, saying that he can have most orders completed within a day's notice, and if the order is large enough Sweet Sunset will deliver to the event.
