Swim Better!

Swim Like A Fish, Have 50% More Energy, Bolt From The Water Like A Prisoner On Jail Break, And Slash Five To Ten Minutes Off Your Triathlon Race Time

Dear Fellow Swimmer,

As you arrive for the race in the early morning, a cool mist hangs in the air. The sun starts to peak out over the horizon and it brings a smile to your face. This isn't your first swim, you've been training for months for this day...but today is different. You've never felt this way before.

Because you're early, your preparation is leisurely, but focused. You're in control.

You look around at your competitors and out over the water as you slip into your wetsuit. You're not only relaxed, you're confident, and looking for your best time ever.

Oh sure, you have the typical race day butterflies, but nothing like the anxiety you've had in the past. In the past you were consumed with thoughts about the swim.

The distance, the water conditions, the splashing, the kicking, the amount of energy you'd expend...the swim. You never gave a second thought to anything else... just the swim.

But, today is different. It's different because you've found a way to conquer the dreaded swim... And you've been training for months.

Here's how you train:

Swim Faster!

My name is Kevin Koskella, and I've spent much of my life swimming competitively. While swimming for the University of California - Davis, I achieved All-American status.

I've taken my success in swimming and combined it with the philosophies and techniques from some of the top swim coaches in the world. This has enabled me to train triathletes from beginner through professional level and help them not only become better swimmers, but better triathletes.

After college, I began training for triathlons, studying nutrition, and working on personal training certifications. Then, in early 2000, I started coaching a masters swim team.

I've never been comfortable with the traditional philosophies of "no pain, no gain", or "the more, the better". There came a point where I realized you can't train for swimming the same way you do for cycling and running. It just didn't make sense to grind out swimming workouts like you could with the other two events... so I started searching for a better way to teach my swimmers.

Get more from less.

I discovered a particular method of swimming that intrigued me, and I started incorporating some of the techniques and drills in workouts, as well as my clinics and private lessons. Here's what happened... I found this particular method helped my swimmers get more out of their strokes, swim faster, and more fluidly, while exerting less energy. In other words, they were getting more for less!

If you're at the beginner level and you're looking for the best way to get started, or you're at the intermediate level, looking to improve, there are limited resources to help you.

Here's how you train:

Triathlon Clothes

Special triathlon gear? Who Needs It? You Do! Because of the unique requirements of changing from swimming to biking to running, each for fairly long distances and times, you need special triathlon equipment. Otherwise, wet gear will chafe your privates when you are running, sweaty cotton will chafe your inner thigh, nipples can be rubbed raw, blisters in your feet can break, filling your shoes with blood - the first time you run, you'll know EXACTLY what I'm referring to! This is NOT a casual stroll around the block, working up a nice glow, but a huge exertion, to be properly prepared for!

Training Styles Used For Swimming

by James Brown

Swimming instructors have to develop many training styles because not all swimmers have the same experience levels. Some swimmers might be under the age of four and need to be trained with learning styles that can be done in a wading pool. For swimmers that will swim in athletic competitions during the year, the coach will have to develop a training schedule that lets the swimmer learn the strokes that they will need for competition in a pool that is sized for swimming competitively.

Some swimmers might need to be retrained before they are ready for swimming at the competitive level. The swimmer might have been lax during the winter and might not have swum at all. The lazy daze of summer might have caused the swimmer to be lax in all manners of training and the swimmer will have to get used to fast starts and regain the competitive edge that they exhibited the year before. Some swimmers lose interest in swimming competitively and will need a persuasive coach to get them back on the team.

Some swimmers need to develop more strength in the upper portion of their bodies because they will be tasked to perform strenuous swimming strokes such as the breaststroke, butterfly, or backstroke during swimming meet styled competitions. The swimmer will perform these swimming strokes during various parts of the day, and each race will require a longer distance than the last.

A coach might approach this type of swimming with training that concentrates on building upper body strength. The coach might require that the swimmer perform each swimming stroke for up to twenty minutes, and during that time, the swimmer will have to test their endurance by doing lap after lap until they have completed the required time limit.

The coach might also require that the swimmer hold on to floatation devices while they kick their legs to propel them around the pool. This training style will help the swimmer to build up strength in the muscles that are in the legs. The legs will be used to perform the kicking motion that is used on all of the swimming strokes that are required in swim meets.

The swimmer with the best strength and muscle condition is more likely to win the race they are in and a good coach will know this. Some coaches might seem to have strange styles of training used for swimming in competitive sports but the physical results of that training will be recognized when the swimmer starts winning races instead of coming in second all of the time.

There are certain training styles that are almost mandatory because without them, the swimmer will not know how to start a race. A swimmer might be tasked with diving from cinder blocks that are at the deep end of a pool several times an hour until they perfect each dive. A swimmer must dive deep enough to submerge all parts of the body but not to the point where time is taken away from swimming to the other end of the pool.

Swimming Techniques

Swimming Efficiently Requires Vessel Shaping

In order to improve their swimming times, athletes competing in a Triathlon should focus on their vessel shaping. Usually a triathlete will focus on increasing their propulsion through the water, giving their body alignment little or no thought.

Studies show that proper technique can increase swim time up to 50% faster. Bill Boomer, swim coach for University of Rochester in New York, believes that vessel shaping, a term he coined, has more impact on a swimmer's time than hand movement.

To reduce drag, swimmers must be consciously aware of what their body is doing when they're in the water. Reduce and then eliminate any actions that aren't required to propel you forward. Baselining your swim technique is impossible to do yourself. You must either have a friend watch you swim or tape you while you swim so that you can see what you're doing when you swim as well.

Swimmers must work on their body alignment in order to improve swim times

To improve your swim efficiency, imagine a straight line going from your starting point to your finish point. Keep your entire body parallel to this straight line at all times. Think about melding with the water, not fighting against it.

Working on your vessel shaping will help as you complete your swim training. Finally, properly fitting swim suits, goggles, and cap will also reduce a triathlete's drag, thereby improving his or her efficiency.

Triathlon Swimming

When we learned to swim freestyle as children, most of us swim flat in the water, with little or no hip rotation as our arms are doing the majority of the work. Many triathletes and open water swimmers have found it necessary to change their stroke and swim more on their sides in order to conserve energy, swim faster, and get through potential rough water conditions with greater ease.

Rotating from side to side as you swim is a method that has been around for over 30 years. When Mark Spitz was gaining national recognition in the early 70's, many critics said his only problem is that he does this side-to-side action as he swims! Little did they realize just how revolutionary that stroke was. Science has now backed up this style of swimming, and great swim coaches like Howard Furby and Ernie Maglischo have popularized swimming on your side with many successful swimmers over the years.

Good swimming is about using the core of your body- hips, stomach, lower back, and chest. Top swimmers rotate the core of the body from one side to the other, while keeping the head fixed. When you rotate in this way, you move through the water more like a fish, or a boat, reaching further forward on each stroke, and maximizing your efficiency.

Here is a drill to begin practicing (you may use Zoomers or fins if you have them): Kick on your side with your left hand extended out and your right hand by your side. Keep your head down and locked to your shoulder. On the second length, switch sides and extend your right hand, with your left hand by your side. When looking down, you should be at about a 90-degree angle in the water. When you need air, roll all the way up into more of a 45-degree angle, take a few breaths, and repeat. Continue to practice this kicking drill and add in arm strokes as your side balance improves.

Swimming freestyle on your side may seem like a foreign concept at first. But with consistent practice, you will be able to swim more efficiently, resulting in faster swim times and greater energy conservation.
