What Should Mature Women Wear On the Beach?

Swimwear for the mature woman - age is just a number

Summer has arrived with a bang, at least it has here in sunny Spain, and I´ve got my least favourite shopping to do - buying a swimsuit. The thing is I recently reached that magical number that best describes me as middle aged so should I be looking to buy a swimsuit for the mature woman? The very word middle aged or mature makes me think of dull or dowdy but in reality women are ignoring their ages and dressing to suit their bodies. A prime example of this is Helen Mirren, the actress, who was photographed last year at the age of 62 wearing a skimpy red bikini on holiday - not the normal choice of swimwear for the mature woman, but she looked stunning and caused many admiring glances from men.

Now I´m not saying all women over 60 should be wearing red bikinis but my point is that mature women today want to look sexy and confident and swimwear for the mature woman is starting to reflect this trend.

How to choose swimwear for the mature woman

Not all of us are blessed with bodies like Helen Mirren so we need to take a critical approach and opt for swimwear for mature women that accentuates our good features and hides our worst ones.

Here are a few tips to help you decide on your choice of swimwear:
  • Most mature women should avoid bikinis and opt for one piece swimsuits or tankinis as these do tend to look more stylish
  • If you have a large bust then choose styles that enhance that area and detract from the tummy area. Try swimsuits with floral tops and plain bottoms, or wrap over styles that hide the tummy and accentuate the bust
  • Buy a good quality swimsuit that contains lycra to help your swimsuit maintain its shape and also to offer you more support
  • If you´re a little flabby round the middle, another good choice is a tankini as these hang over the briefs and help disguise your tummy. Also, the tops and bottoms can be purchased in different sizes, making them very versatile
  • Buy a swimsuit that has built in cups as nothing is more unattractive than sagging breasts
  • If you´re heavy around the leg area then try a swimsuit with an attached skirt or go for a boy leg style which is flattering to the figure
  • If you´re really unhappy with your body then invest in a top of the range "miracle" suit. These are swimsuits that contain an enormous amount of clever styling and lots of lycra to make you look instantly slimmer
  • Buy an matching sarong with your swimsuit to use to cover your legs and bottom if you are a little self conscious

How To Care For Your New Swimsuit

swimwear for mature women

Now you´ve chosen your new swimwear, here are a few tips to keep it looking as good as when you first got it.

Always wash it by hand in cold water

Never put your swimsuit in the washing machine as it will damage the fabric and strip it of its elasticity

Don´t leave your swimsuit to dry out in the sun as it will fade - hang in a shady area

Always wash after each use and especially after being in a swimming pool or hot tub

Avoid all contact with bleach
