What are switching power supplies?
A general description of switching power supplies.
Switching power supplies, switched-mode power supply, SMPS, is basically an electronic power supply unit that has a switching regulator. Why would you need a switching regulator? The switch-mode power supply rapidly switches a power transistor between full on and completely off. What are the advantages of this? The main advantage of this method is greater efficiency because the switching transistor dissipates little power in the full on phase and the off state. Another advantage is its smaller size and lighter weight from the elimination of low frequency transformers which have a high weight and lower heat generation from the higher efficiency.
