SWTOR Playable Species | Star Wars: The Old Republic
This lens is about the currently confirmed SWTOR Playable Species, particularly which SWTOR species you can choose as your character, and what classes you can play them as. I will be dropping a few more lenses on other related topics. I'm a huge MMO and Star Wars fan, so I hope you'll excuse my excitement and occasional drooling!
I am making a few lenses on Star Wars: The Old Republic as I'm hoping that it will help a few of the newbies out there trying to get into the game, or just fellow players and enthusiasts who need a little bit more information on what is probably the hottest MMORPG at the moment. If and when things change after the game is released, I will try to keep these lenses updated.
So please have some fun, play hard, feel free to ask questions at the bottom and shake it up on here!

What are the SWTOR Playable Species?
Introduction
The SWTOR playable species (often also called the SWTOR playable races) are basically those species that you will be able to use as your main character. http://www.squidoo.com/workshop/swtor-playable-species
For a while, it wasn't known which SWTOR playable species would be available to choose from, but a lot more information has been released and the SWTOR races have been confirmed, which is so cool! It's not fun being in the dark about these things!
There are nine SWTOR playable species that you can choose from at this moment, around the period of the game's release.
They are: Chiss, Cyborg, Human, Miraluka, Mirialan, Rattataki, Sith Pureblood, Twi'lek and Zabrak.
Obviously, you have unique SWTOR species social abilities and particular social traits but I don't think there are any particular benefits for picking any. These qualities only come in handy for role playing and social interaction. You can find out more about this by clicking HERE.
Anyway, let's have a peek at these SWTOR playable species below, shall we?! I'll also be telling you which races can be which classes.

SWTOR Playable Species: Chiss
No one knows that much about the Chiss because they come from a remote planet, Csilla. However, although they are tall-looking aliens with blue skin and glowing red eyes, they are actually supposed to be similar to the human race in a lot of ways.SWTOR Chiss players can customise their character to be either male or female for this species. At the moment, you can only play with this species as an Imperial Agent, which is a Sith Empire class. So this species is exclusive to the Empire faction.
SWTOR Playable Species: Cyborg
These guys look like humans, but are cybernetically enhanced with robotic body parts. They can also look a bit "mixed up", with bits and pieces from other races and species.
At this moment, you can play the SWTOR Cyborg species as a Smuggler or Trooper (if you have allegiance to the Galaxy Republic), and as a Sith Warrior, Imperial Agent or Bounty Hunter (if you are in the Sith Empire faction).

SWTOR Playable Species: Human
I think this SWTOR playable species is a given - you're always going to get a human as a playable race in pretty much all MMORPGs.The SWTOR Human species are from the planet Coruscant (no, not Earth!), and can be used with any of the eight classes. I think you should able to customise pretty much every little detail on your character, including anything from hair, scar, lipstick, tattoos and, of course, gender.
SWTOR Playable Species: Miraluka
The Miraluka are from the planet Alpherides. They are like humans, but they actually have no eyes. So they are Force-sensitive species and they have the ability to use the Force to see.As you can imagine, because of their attachment to the Force, they have allegiance to the Galactic Republic, and the Jedi class (Jedi Knight or Jedi Consular) in particular. And I reckon that these guys would be really cool to use as Jedi Knights because of how they have adapted to the Force and the abilities they have as a result.
SWTOR Playable Species: Mirialan
The Mirialan species are from the planet Mirial. They also look a lot like humans, but with skin that can look anything from yellowish-green to pale-coloured skin. They are known for their speed, agility and good combat skills. They would be perfect to use as either a Jedi Knight or Consular, but can play in any class within the Galactic Republic (ie. also as a Trooper or Smuggler).
SWTOR Playable Species: Rattataki
Coming from the planet Rattatak in the outside galaxy, this SWTOR species are basically "fighting machines". They look like humans but with no hair and very pale skin.Did you ever see that movie 300 about the Spartans? Well, these guys are sort of like that. After centuries of battles and wars, the weak have been killed off and only the strongest and most lethal of this race have survived over time. So they are highly skilled and ferocious in battle.
From what I can see, customisation will be limited with this species, and you can only really make yours unique by the armour you choose, the gender, and tattoos. I know that this will put people off from using this species, but I actually think that they would be absolutely blinding to use as a Bounty Hunter. In fact, they can only play as a Bounty Hunter, Sith Inquisitor, or Imperial Agent.
SWTOR Playable Species: Sith Pureblood
When I saw this was one of the SWTOR playable species, I was like "Now we're talking! Finally! A playable, pure-blooded Sith!" They are direct descendants from the pure Sith species, and are known for being powerful and thirsty for war.Obviously, this species are restricted to the Sith Empire, and you can only play this species as a Sith Warrior or a Sith Inquisitor. They look pretty evil and mean, and you will be able to customise them in the game to make them look even meaner, if you want to, using Facial Tendrils (which are extra bony structures around the mouth and cheeks). They also have darkish-red skin which you won't be able to change, and I think that is actually a cool idea.

SWTOR Playable Species: Twi'lek
As far as I am concerned, this was also another given to be a playable species, like the human race. The Twi'lek are commonly known as a Star Wars race, particularly for colourful skin and the "brain tails" (or "lekkus") which come out of their heads. These are used to communicate on a very advanced level that other races cannot understand. Their females are very beautiful and seductive, and are usually harboured as slaves across the galaxy because of this. You can customise your Twi'lek character through the skin colour, which can be blue, yellow or yellowish-green. You can also add "lekku" tattoos, and choose between male and female gender.
You can play these as a Jedi Knight, a Jedi Consular, Smuggler or Sith Inquisitor. To be honest, though, it doesn't seem right having a "bad" Twi'lek if you ask me! So I wouldn't expect too many Twi'lek Sith Inquisitors.
SWTOR Playable Species: Zabrak
The Zabrak species hail from the planet Iridonia. To get a picture of what these guys are like, think "Darth Maul" from Episode 1. I have to admit - I think these guys are pretty cool, with red skin, horns and facial tattoos.Again, it seems pretty straightforward that, with their naturally evil tendencies, this species will be confined to the Sith Empire, but actually you can use this to play any class across both factions, just like humans.
I'm not too sure about customisation for this. Zabraks are known to have many appearances and skin colours, but I have only seen red at the moment.
You can get even more information on the SWTOR playable species HERE, including the social abilities and other qualities that could help you choose the right species and classes.
Also, check out this pretty cool guide on crew skills and levelling in super quick time. This is very important stuff for any serious SWTOR gamer looking to be competitive and dominate the game, because it gets you flying up the levels very quickly in the SWTOR galaxy without needing to waste time roaming from place to place and feeding off scraps.
Summary - Which species can play as which class?
I just want to summarise below what races can be what classes in the game. Hopefully this will help make your choice easier because you can easily check it out at a glance and decide on the right combinations for you.

- Ever since the Dark Horse comics about the ancient Sith and Exar Kun stories I've always wanted to play a game where I could play one of the original Sith. Can't wait.
