SWTOR Skill Trees | Star Wars: The Old Republic

In this lens, I will be talking about SWTOR Skill Trees, and this is something that is quite important in Star Wars: The Old Republic. It can be a little bit confusing for people, but is actually crucial to understand and use if you want to progress through the game. Hopefully I can show you that it's actually not that hard to understand, and you will learn how best to use them in your gaming.

SWTOR Skill Trees Explained

Star Wars: The Old Republic | Background

Star Wars: The Old Republic

As you probably know, there are 2 Factions in the game - the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic.

These are split up into 8 Classes (4 each):

Republic Classes: Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular, Smuggler and Trooper.

Sith Classes: Bounty Hunter, Imperial Agent, Sith Inquisitor, and Sith Warrior.

Now, this is where it gets interesting...

At the moment, each class is broken further into 2 areas of specialisation, also known as SWTOR advanced classes. So, if your math is anywhere better than mine, you will see that there are 16 Advanced Classes in all:

Republic Trooper - Commando and Vanguard

Smuggler - Gunslinger and Scoundrel

Jedi Knight - Guardian and Sentinel

Jedi Consular - Sage and Shadow

Bounty Hunter - Mercenary and Powertech

Imperial Agent - Operative and Sniper

Sith Warrior - Juggernaut and Marauder

Sith Inquisitor - Sith Assassin and Sith Sorcerer

This is actually a good thing that Star Wars: The Old Republic has split it up like this, because it gives us gamers even more options to customise and specialise their characters as we wish. This allows players to assume different roles when playing in parties and groups, and opens up options for different combat styles.

What are SWTOR Skill Trees?

SWTOR Skill Trees

Each class has 5 skills available to it. These are actually known as SWTOR skill trees, because your character acquires certain abilities as you collect training points and XP (experience) which you can spend to move further and build along the tree.

Now, because there are 2 advanced classes for each class, these 5 skills have to be shared between those two advanced classes.
5 skills split two-ways is 2.5... which means that each advanced class has three skills in total - two unique skills, and then one which is shared with the other area of specialisation within its class.

Are you still with me?

Okay, let's try the following example:

As a Smuggler within the Republic faction, when you reach level 10, you will be able to pick from 2 different areas of specialisation or advanced classes - Gunslinger and Scoundrel.

The Smuggler class has 5 skill trees in total available to it: Dirty Fighting, Saboteur, Sharpshooter, Sawbones and Scrapper.

The Gunslinger advanced class has 3 of these skills available to it: Dirty Fighting, Saboteur and Sharpshooter.

The Scoundrel advanced class has 3 of those also available to it: Dirty Fighting, Sawbones and Scrapper.

Do you notice that they both have the Dirty Fighting skill tree in common, but the other two skills for each are unique?

So hopefully you can see that there are 5 skills available to the Smuggler class, of which two are unique to each of the Gunslinger and Scoundrel classes, and one shared skill set (Dirty Fighting) which marks them both as Smugglers.

These skills are very distinct, as you can see, and how they are combined is very particular for each advanced class. This is what makes each advanced class unique.

So, to summarise:

Each class is made up of 2 advanced classes, which are particular areas of specialisation, and has 5 skill trees available to choose from.

Each advanced class has 3 skill trees - 2 of these skills are unique to that advanced class only, and 1 is shared and acts as a characteristic of the common class.

SWTOR Skill Tree Calculator

Click HERE for a very good illustration of the SWTOR skill trees in action (this is a nifty page created by Darthhater.com). This is called a Skill Tree Calculator.

You can select your advanced class and see all its skill trees, as well as the different levels you can get to, and how many points you need at each stage. So, for example, you can see the swtor training points better illustrated, and you can work out the best crew skills for smuggler gunslinger, or whatever swtor advanced class you are playing as.

Have a play with it, and hopefully it will make a lot more sense. You need to learn how to use the skill trees very well to be able to level up quickly.

Also, you can Click HERE for great SWTOR build and leveling tips! All this isn't even worth knowing until you get to level 10 anyways. And the last thing you want to do is spend ages trying to get to level 10, while being left behind.
