A Sydney Market Shopping Guide

Sydney has a great market shopping scene with over a dozen weekly markets and many more monthly ones.

There are markets aimed directly at visitors to Sydney such as the Sunday Opera House Markets and the weekend Rocks Market, others that feature up and coming designers and great fashion finds and also some really great food markets like the Sydney Fish Market at Blackwattle Bay and the Eveleigh Farmers Market.

Markets are perfect for picking up interesting souvenirs, uncovering a new designer at bargain prices or just filling your picnic basket.

Paddington Markets

Great for the budding fashionista

Paddington Market is a great stop for visitors to Sydney. Set in church grounds on busy Oxford Street it offers high quality art, craft and fashion items. Originally all goods here were Australian made and I am certain that is still true for the majority of stalls. With over 200 stalls and plenty of food and drink on offer it's a pleasant way to spend a Saturday morning and if you are a true shopping lover you could continue your day exploring the designer shops along Oxford Street.

Key Facts - Paddington Markets

When: Saturdays 10am - 4pm
Where: 343 Oxford Street Paddington
Why: Contemporary high quality art and fashion goods
How: Bus 378 or 380 from the city
Visit Paddington Markets website for more details.

Glebe Markets

A family friendly market with some great bargains

Glebe market is the hippy market of Sydney.. it's slightly alternative, which is probably due to being located a stone's throw from Sydney University. A mix of new and pre-loved items, lots of great food and plenty of space for kids to run around when the shopping gets too much.

Key Facts - Glebe Markets

When: Saturdays 10am - 4pm
Where: Glebe Point Road, Glebe
Why: Good value alternative market
How: 431, 432, 433 or 434 bus from George Street in the city

Eveleigh Farmers Market

The perfect place to sample some fantastic Aussie produce

This market is the perfect place to buy provisions to eat or cook in your hostel or apartment. There is a great range of high quality gourmet and organic foods and many of the city's top producers are here. There are no bank machines (ATM's) in the market so make sure you carry cash.
There is also a monthly art market on this site (first Sunday of each month) that is well worth a visit if you can. See their website below for more information.

Paddy's Market

Cheap shopping in the heart of the city

Paddy's is the largest market in the city. It offers cheap fruit and vegetable, meat and seafood along with almost everything else you can think of. There are plenty of cheap souvenirs here but they are predominantly made overseas and not high quality. Still if you need to take home a pile of fridge magnets or cheap t-shirts this is the place for you.

Bondi Beach Markets

Emerging designers, hand made goods, retro and vintage clothing and furniture can all be found among the 150 stalls at this weekly Bondi Market. When you have had enough shopping head across the road to the beach and take the famous Bondi coastal walk - there are more details about the walk on my Sydney Walks page

Sydney Opera House Market

Over 40 stalls selling quality Australian arts and crafts line the forecourt of the Opera House every Sunday. In its 12th year this market is a great place to pick up souvenirs of a higher quality than those on offer at Paddy's Market and the various souvenir shops throughout the city. Great for jewelery, photographs and paintings but not the place to come for cheap key rings and stuffed koalas :-)

The Rocks Markets

The white umbrellas of the Rocks Market provide shelter from the weather and a unique look for this quality market. There is a huge range of unusual gift ideas for both travellers and locals. When you get tired of shopping or if you need some time to ponder your purchases there are some great pubs and cafes running along the length of the market.
