Quintin Swallow Sykes Family History
This page details my search for my biological father, my siblings, & my family history. I just want to know where I came from! When I was around 12 or 13 years old my mother told me that my biological father was Quintin Swallow Sykes and not the same person who was my sister's father. I was stunned to say the least. I began asking questions. Lots of questions!
Quintin was never married to my mom. They only dated and she became pregnant. My mom said she told him about me but he never acknowledged me as his daughter or helped her financially. She almost gave me up for adoption-I was kept in some type of temporary foster care for 30 days when my grandparents stepped in and offered to help out. So my mom kept me.
Before the Internet, in the late 80's, I went to the local library and searched Chicago phone books searching for my Quintin's mailing address. All I knew is that he lived in Chicago somewhere. With such an uncommon name I hoped to find it and I did. Quintin's family did not know I even existed until after I mailed a letter to his last known address in 1986 or 1987 ( I think). Soon after the letter was mailed I was contacted by his brother, Heaton. He came to visit me in Michigan. He said the letter was received by Quintin's widow and she contacted Heaton.
During our short visit he said he knew nothing about me. He said that his brother never mentioned that my mom said he was my father. I remember him asking me lots of questions about what I knew about his brother and my mother's relationship when they dated. I told him what I knew. Our visit was brief and he was short. He asked to have a photo of me to keep and I gave it to him. I never heard from him again and he never told ANYONE else in the family of our meeting.
My mother insists he is my biological father so I decided to keep searching to see if I have any siblings. On September 23, 2000 I posted a message on the Genealogy.com site under the Sykes surname forum searching for any family members. Then in May 2001 I received an email from Quintin Jr. who found me through an online posting that I had made just a year earlier. We began communicating and shared lots of information and he felt comfortable sharing my "news" with his siblings. As a result I agreed to meet two of his children, Sueanne and Gary, in the summer of 2001. Our meeting went very well. We shared pictures with each other and asked each other lots of questions!
I felt welcomed by both of them. But I am sure all of us would like to have confirmation that we are in fact related. I would love to have a DNA test done to find out for sure if he was my father- I already believe it but I would like to prove it to my half-siblings. After all I am the one professing that I am their half-sister. Maybe I will do that soon. In the mean time I am researching his ancestors hoping that they are truly mine as well. So far it has been interesting research. I am learning a lot.

On May 16, 2010 I found this photo of Aubrey Sykes & Anna Ruth Swallow
on Feb. 19, 1921 Passport Application
This is the picture from a passport application for a trip on Feb. 19, 1921 to Cuba, Jamaica, Panama & Costa Rica. The application states Aubrey Sykes was 37, 5'10", eyes; blue gray with brown hair. At this time he lived at 4321 Grand Blvd. Chicago, IL

Heaton Sykes Funeral & Dinner
I am glad I had the courage to attend a funeral of an uncle who I am not sure really ever believed that I was his niece. It all turned out positive for me as I was able to see Gary again and finally meet Tommy. I was also able to meet my cousins Sandy and Richard. This visit was also special to me because my son was able to meet them all too. We don't have many blood relatives in our family so for him to actually meet some is a blessing. Pretty much January 7th was a good day for me!
The picture here was taken at Gibson's restaurant after the funeral. L to R My cousin Sandra Sykes who is Bryon Sykes daughter. My son Taylor, Me, my half brothers; Tommy Sykes & Gary Sykes.
Heaton Halliday Sykes
January 18, 1914 - Feburary 3, 2011
No where in the obituary below do they mention my name as it has never been proven that I am Heaton's niece, his brother Quintin's daughter...In the late 80's Heaton did come to visit me when I contacted the family about with the premise that I was Quintin's daughter. Heaton never acknowledged it....he never told any of Quintin's children that he visited me or of my possible connection to the family. He did however ask for a picture of me to take with him. I gave him a photo, he left, and I never heard from him after that again.
In 2001 I was able to find and contact Quintin Jr and as a result set up a meeting with Gary and Sueanne. They were very open to the possibility that I could be there half sister. I got a much different welcoming than that of my meeting years earlier with Heaton. Obviously nothing will ever be proven until I have a DNA test done... In the meantime I am researching the Sykes family as if it is my own until I find out otherwise.
Heaton's Obituary from the Thornridge Funeral Home site:
Heaton Halliday Sykes, 97 years young. Beloved son of the late Aubrey and Ruth Sykes (nee Swallow). Dear brother of the late Aubrey, Byron (late Gloria) and Quintin (Barbara) Sykes. Loving uncle of Thomas H., Sandra, Stephen, Sueanne (Douglas) Sluis, Gary, Richard (Marlene) and Quintin Sykes, Jr. Proud great-uncle of 7 and great-great uncle to 8.
Heaton was the Vice-President of Sykes Terminal Warehouse Company and Sykes Sheet Metal Company in Chicago. A member of Lake Geneva Country Club in Wisconsin and the Saddle & Cycle Club and The Tavern Club both in Chicago. Heaton had a very blessed life. He was an avid traveler to many, many places in this beautiful world. He loved the parties at Lake Geneva Country Club and being with all his friends. He also enjoyed Oconomowoc, Wisconsin where he spent his childhood and adult years enjoying the family summer home on beautiful Lac Labelle.
He enjoyed the company of his many friends that he met while traveling and they in return traveled from all over the country to attend his parties in Chicago and Lake Geneva. His smile, wit, sense of humor and charm will be missed by all. Visitation Monday, February 7, 2011, 10:00 a.m. until the time of Funeral service 12:00 p.m. at Thornridge Funeral Home (Janusz Family Funeral Service) 15801 S. Cottage Grove Ave., four blocks North of 162nd St. (Rte. 6) Dolton/South Holland. Entombment family mausoleum, Oak Woods Cemetery.
I created a findagrave memorial for him along with other immediate Sykes family members. Here is the link to Heaton's Findagrave Memorial Page.
On Feb. 7, 2011 I Visited the Raymond G. Sykes Family Mausoleum
Oak Woods Cemetery Chicago, IL
Raymond G. Sykes Family Mausoleum.
Oak Woods Cemetery was established in 1853, one of the city's oldest cemeteries. Approx 183 acres with around 200,000 burials, Oak Woods is the final resting place for many of Chicago's famous and infamous. Clearly you can see from the symbols on this stained class that Raymond Gilson Sykes was a Mason. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Masons.
Address: S. Cottage Grove Ave. & E. 67th Street, with entrance at 1035 E. 67th Chicago, IL.

On March 13, 2011 I bought this engraving of Raymond Gilson Sykes
I knew eBay could be a source for finding ancestors but this is really cool. I wish I had the money to purchase the actual etching right now but I don't.... For now all I have is this image. Ok, I made an offer on March 12, 2011 and they countered back. I then made a counter to their counter and they accepted. It was listed for $73.95 and I got it for $25. Basically I am looking at it like I have bought myself a birthday present-as my birthday is tomorrow, March 14th. I'm so excited!!!!!!!
Since Raymond G. Sykes was active in the business, industrial, and professional life in OH and IL I am now adding an eBay search below so I do not miss another great find like this.

Katie Sykes' Wedding
Their wedding was absolutely beautiful! The church was lovely and decorated to compliment a romantic wedding ceremony. We sat in the 5th or 6th row back on the isle so I could see everyone come down the isle. My camera was acting up so I did not get all the photos that I wanted, The photos I got outside were much better.
Such a beautiful ceremony!
