The Symbolism Behind Your Favorite Color

When asked what is your favorite color, some people answer immediately while others hesitate. My favorite color is yellow, but there is little yellow in my home or in the clothes I wear. Green represents life to me, and red is both excitement and caution. I love to see an orange pumpkin, but cringe at the idea of wearing an orange dress.

Colors are complicated. We respond to them on a subconscious and emotional level. The response to a color is often contradictory and varies depending on the culture and the circumstances. When I think of green, I think of green grass and the coming of spring. It is the symbol of ecology, but it also represents wealth and money. A green light gives us the go-ahead.

We will never truly understand our reaction to one color or another, but a better understanding of the symbolism behind the color will bring us one step closer.

Rainbows
A Spectrum of Color

Rainbows

Throughout human history rainbows have been a symbol of hope. The storm is passing. The sun will shine again. We dream. If we follow our dreams, like the rainbow, and we will find that pot of gold hidden in the light.

White light is a combination of all colors. It represents life and hope. We step out of the darkness and into the light.

The color red evokes extreme emotions in everyone. It is a passionate color that can lead to violence and warfare, or the flush of love that transcends time. It is power, the banner that leads the troops to war, and a warning of danger up ahead. Red is the symbol of courage and sacrifice, life and death.

It is Cupid on one end and the Devil on the other.

Orange

Orange is a combination of both red and yellow. While it is a warm color, it doesn't shout the way red does. The aggression associated with red is calmed by the cheerfulness of yellow.

Orange

When I think of orange, the colors of fall come to mind. It is still warm, but the cold of winter will be upon us soon. Orange is strength and endurance. It will keep us warm until the signs of life stir in the frozen land once again.

Orange is vibrant and warm. It will stimulate your emotions as well as your appetite.

Green

Green

Green is a symbol of spring and the renewal of life. After a long, cold winter the gardens and the landscape comes to life in every hue of green imaginable. If we recycle and care about the nature around us, we're living green.

It is also a soothing color. Hospital rooms are often painted green for its calming effect on patients and their anxious visitors.

In the Middle Ages, brides often wore green on their wedding day as a symbol of fertility.

Green is a cool, refreshing color.

Emeralds are one of the most prized of the precious gemstones.

But there is another side of green.

There is the green-eyed monster named envy. It can rear its ugly head and wreak havoc in the blink of an eye.

And then there is money, the ever popular greenbacks. Nothing will bring the green-eyed monster to the surface faster than that.

Violet

Violet is a lighter shade of purple and purple is royalty, luxury and wealth. It is a mysterious color derived from a mixture of opposites. Red is the warmest of the warm colors and blue is cool to the point of being cold. Combined they often pull an unpredictable reaction from people. When it comes to purple, few people are blasé. They either love it or they hate it.
