Pelvic Girdle Pain In Pregnancy

Symphysis pubis dysfunction or SPD affects women during and after pregnancy and causes pain and mobility problems in any of the three pelvic joints.  Symptoms can begin as early as the first trimester, but most women start to notice them around the 20 week mark.


 A woman's pelvic girdle consists of three large bones, attached to one another by strong ligaments.  Normally the ligaments are not very flexible, but during pregnancy the hormone relaxin is released and this causes the ligaments to soften.  This is necessary to allow some pelvic movement during birth, but if the ligaments loosen too soon pelvic problems can arise.


Some women find that their symptoms ease straight after birth, but for an unlucky few it can take a lot longer.  There are lots of things that you can do in the meantime to ease they symptoms and reduce the pain.


Around one in five women suffer from pelvic pain during their pregnancy, it is a very treatable condition, but it's important to seek treatment as soon as you get symptoms.

Is There A Cause Of Pelvic Girdle Pain In Pregnancy?

Pregnancy RelaxationExperts are still not entirely sure of the reason why some women will suffer from symphysis pubis dysfunction during their pregnancy, whilst others are completely symptom free. For some women they might have severe pelvic girdle pain in one pregnancy and no pain at all in the next. Theories include:

Misalignment of the pelvic bones

Increased levels of relaxin and progesterone

Previous labors putting stress on the symphysis pubis joint

Accidents involving trauma to the pelvic area

Hyper-mobility of the joints

What are the symptoms of Pelvic Girdle Pain?

Symptoms may include all or some of these:

* Pain in one or more joints of the pelvis, especially affecting the pubic bone at the front.

* Pain in the hip joints, the lower back or the inner thighs.

* A pronounced waddle.

* Pain when climbing stairs.

* Difficulties getting in and out of a car, turning over in bed and getting out of the bath.

* Pain when moving your legs apart.

* Knee Pain

* A clicking or grinding noise in the pelvic joints.

* Difficulty in lifting a leg.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it is important to get them checked out by your midwife, obstetrician or GP.

Tips To Ease SPD

Lifting: Try to avoid lifting as much as possible, obviously this is impossible if you already have a small child, but be sensible. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, bend your knees slightly and keep your back straight as you bend forward. Hug the object or child close to you, straighten up your hips and then extend your knees. Keep movements as slow and controlled as possible.

Pushing a buggy: Always make sure that the pressure comes from your entire body, not just your arms. Keep the buggy as close to your body as possible and make sure your back is straight and your shoulders are back.

Dressing and undressing: Always sit down to get dressed or undressed and make sure you don't stand on just one leg as this will put too much strain on your pelvic joints. Wear comfortable shoes and avoid high heels.

Relax: Make sure you allow plenty of time for rest and relaxation - Important anyway when you are pregnant but even more so if you are suffering from SPD.

Bending: Avoid bending down as much as possible, try to enlist the help of your partner or children. If you have to bend always keep your back straight and use your knees.

Avoid twisting and squatting.

When walking take smaller steps.

Treatments For Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction

Always consult your midwife, GP or obstetrician before trying any of these treatments

Accupuncture This treatment can significantly reduce the amount of pain.

Osteopathy A gentle way of realigning the pelvic bones.

Painkillers If the pain is very severe your GP can prescribe painkillers that are safe for use in pregnancy, but this should always be a last resort.

Physiotherapy A therapist who understands SPD can teach you exercises to reduce the pain and to strengthen the joints. You will also be taught the best way to bend and lift.

Kegel Exercises Are Great For Relieving Pelvic Girdle Pain

Kegel Exercises Performing Kegel exercises correctly can be great for easing pelvic pain. Kegel exercises are easy and can be performed anywhere. Next time you are urinating, stop yourself mid flow - the muscles you use do do this are your PC muscles and these are the ones you need to exercise. Make sure you are not tightening any other muscles like those in your thighs or buttocks.

Start your exercises by squeezing these muscles tight, holding for 3 or 4 seconds,and then letting go. Repeat this ten times leaving a five or ten second gap between each squeeze. Do this several times throughout the day, you can do Kegel exercises anywhere, even waiting in line at the store!

Pregnancy Pillows

Hold an ice pack wrapped in a towel on your hips or pelvic joint

Move slowly without any sudden movements

Sometimes perching on a stool is more comfortable than a chair
