Symptoms of Heartworm

Heartworm is a disease that can be contracted by both dogs and cats.  It is the result of a mosquito bite that from a mosquito that is infected with this larvae and transmitted to the animal when it bites the animal.  The parasites then travel to the heart of the animals.  They reproduce and multiply in the heart and then also travel to the lungs of the animal.

Dogs are better hosts than cats and allow more reproduction of the parasites.  They can have up to 250 heartworms.  The severity of the disease depends of the number of heartworms, the duration, and location of the infection, and whether the dog has a good immune system.

Cats usually allow fewer worms to reproduce and usually no more than 10 are seen.  However, a single heartworm can cause death to a feline.

How Symptoms of Heartworm Manifest

In both dogs and cats the symptoms of heartworm are usually vague and hard to detect. These symptoms may include a dry cough, shortness of breath, lethargy, loss of appetite and nervousness. Cats are even harder to detect than dogs and many times die without detection. In advanced stages they may experience heart failure and clots in the lungs causing the death of the animal.

Because these parasites attack the internal organs of your animal, including the heart and liver, these organs will start to malfunction, causing pain to the animal.

Treatment of Heartworm is Very Dangerous

Treatment of heartworm is very dangerous. About 50 percent of the felines will die during treatment. Dogs have a better chance of being treated. However, the treatment to get rid of the infection entails giving the dog arsenic, a poison which is extremely damaging to the dog, even if he survives.

Even preventive medicine is a monthly pill which is composed of chemical pesticides! This monthly dosage has cumulative effects and has life-threatening effects on the animals. Overtime the liver and kidneys of the animal are compromised, and many degenerative disorders are found.

And the animal health industry is still using this treatment! They discourage natural remedies because they make a lot of money with these medications which are actually shortening the lives of our pets.

Statistics of Conventional Heartworm Treatment

From eSSortment
"DEC (diethylcarbamazine) tablets are given on a daily basis to dogs with no microfilaria. Side effects include headaches, malaise, nausea, and weakness, but in general DEC is considered safe and reliable."

"Ivermectin is the active ingredient in once-a-month heartworm preventives for dogs and cats, and they do not have to be heartworm-free to start taking it. However, severe adverse reactions have been reported in Collies and Collie mixes as well as other dogs. Milder reactions are stomach and intestinal upset, irritability, and stiffness."

"Although heartworm preventive medicine is very effective, it also carries significant risks. The American Veterinary Medical Association has found that 65% of all reported drug reactions and 48% of all reported deaths in pets are caused by heartworm preventives."
