What Are The Signs and Symptoms of Perimenopause? 

The signs and symptoms of perimenopause are as varied as are the women who may exerience them. Below we will outline what are probably the the most commonly experienced symptoms of perimenopause:

  • Period changes. Probably one of the first symptoms of perimenopause you will notice will be changes in your menstrual cycle. Periods could be shorter, longer, lighter, heavier, or you may have spotting between periods. You may even skip a period now and then.

  • Fuzzy thinking. Feeling overwhelmed with thoughts or responsibilities, inability to focus, stressed out by life. These can be symptoms of perimenopause that may develop, usually due to hormone fluctuations. Don't let fear or anxiety keep you from seeking help.

Managing Your Symptoms of Perimenopause 

These are just a few options which have worked for other women. They may seem like common sense, but sometimes it helps to know what has made a difference for others. Try one, two or all of them to help alleviate your symptoms of menopause.

  • For help with hot flashes, wear layers made of natural fabrics so you can easily remove them when you first notice a hot flash coming on. Then, after your discomfort passes, you can put them back on to stay comfortable.

  • Drink something cold and refreshing, preferably unsweetened and nonalcoholic, at the first sign of a hot flash starting. A personal favorite is unsweetened cranberry juice, club soda and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice over crushed ice. Very refreshing!

  • You might consider keeping an ice pack handy for hot flashes that occur at night. Cold water helps as well, but this may increase your need to get up and urinate which will further disrupt your sleep.

  • Use natural fabrics for your sheets, blankets, underwear and night clothes so that your skin can naturally regulate its own temperature.

  • Vaginal dryness or itching, both internal and external, is caused by the tissues becoming thinner and less elastic, just like the skin on other parts of your body. Personal lubricants or moisturizers help many women in decreasing this especially bothersome of all the symptoms of perimenopause. Some physicians suggest practicing Kegel exercises to improve muscle tone and blood supply to the area.

  • Always talk to your healthcare provider. They can be an invaluable resource for both natural and prescription remedies. Plus, they need to know what is going on with you, physically and emotionally, as these could be symptoms of something else entirely.

    Very informative lens and helped to make me feel not so insane as I suffer through. You're missing the period fluctuactions on your survey though and for me, that is the worst of my perimenopause problems. Unpredictable, hurts like a son of a gun and is practically ruining my life! Can't wait for menopause!
