Synaesthesia - When the senses overlap

A surprising number of people are able to 'taste' colors or words. People with Synesthesia are not crazy, nor are they "imagining things." Synesthesia should not to be confused with magic, occult, or "New Age." Synesthesia is a neurological condition.

Some people with Synesthesia (called Synesthetes) identify colors with different letters or numbers. Feelings are also sometimes associated with music and certain colors. A new type of Synesthesia has been discovered in which a person hears sounds associated with lights. Synesthesia seems to have a genetic base that can also be altered by life experiences.

It's interesting to me that many people with synesthesia are artists, musicians, or others with creative talents. I wonder how many of use have some degree of Synesthesia ourselves, but we may not be aware of it. Personally, I have had some instances of experiencing Synesthesia, but some people feel it all the time. I think when a person has some Synesthesia, it can be a strength.

Video About Synesthesia

The man in this video says Synesthesia is why he has always been able to memorize music quickly, is a good speller because he associates colors with letters, and automatically knows when a composition for a photograph seems "right."
