Now I know from most of my readers, you're probably going to think that I'm naive, young and stupid. This is my tale of being infected with the sexually transmitted disease known as Syphilis. To be completely honest, I didn't know this STD even existed! I mean I was taught about safe sex and STDs in school, but they don't really "teach" you. I mean you don't know what you're looking for! They're just words.
Really, for those of you out there, I know you've all heard of STDs, but do you really know what they're all about. I'm talking symptoms, treatments, cures, and complications if they're not diagnosed? Snicker all you want, but I'm pretty sure that the majority of the people out there and people reading this have no sweet clue. So, please hold your judgment as I am hoping this will warn others.
Did you know without treatment, syphilis can lead to damage throughout your body? Syphilis also increases the risk of HIV infection and, for women, can cause problems during pregnancy. Treatment can help prevent future damage but can't repair or reverse damage that's already occurred.
You may find little bumps called "gummas," on your body. These bumps can develop on your skin, bones, liver or any other organ in the late stage of syphilis. If you see these on your skin, you must get tested right away to make sure! However, if you're treated during this stage, the gummas will usually disappear.
Luckily, Syphilis is treatable and you can be cured. However, there might be permanent damage that is caused. If it is not diagnosed, then it could lead health complications such as:
* Stroke
* Infection and inflammation of the membranes and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord (meningitis)
* Poor muscle coordination
* Numbness
* Paralysis
* Deafness or visual problems
* Personality changes
* Dementia
So, for those of you out there who had a little chuckle at my situation, or thought that I was ignorant, well I have to agree. I should have educated myself. But, with that being said, take a look in the mirror. Did you know this much about Syphilis or any other STD? It's a major problem that we're all facing: A lack of sexual education. I'm just trying to do my part and give a heads up to what people could face if they are not aware.
Syphilis- sure people know the name, but do they really know what it's all about, and what health problems it can lead to?
