Yamaha SZR660
The Yamaha SZR660 was released in 1996. Taking the engine from the off road XTZ660, the idea was to create a light single cylinder sports bike and bring up to date the Yamaha big single from the days of the SRX. The bike was designed and built by Belgarda in Italy.A combination of high sales price and poor straight line performance (when compared to the inline fours of the same period) doomed the SZR from the outset. Despite being able to out handle a lot of contemporary bikes, most sports bike riders where only interested in outright speed.
After only two years the SZR had been dropped by Yamaha UK and was being cleared out, heavily discounted. The bike did continue for a few more years in other European countries and Australia.
