Intro

In the first tutorial I showed you how to turn your paintings into outstanding t-shirt designs. In this tutorial, you will learn how to design attractive looking text for your t-shirts. Making your text art clear and easy to read is important. If no one can read your clever slogans, you will never make the kind of sales you want from your t-shirt store.

Keep it simple. There is a rule of thumb I learned in my graphic design classes; if it takes someone too long to get the concept (more than 2 seconds), than its not working. Good design is about communicating an idea in a simple and direct way. People have to "get it" right away without thinking too much about it. One way to help you get your idea across a lot quicker is by making your text really easy to read.

Using Decorative Text

Resist the Temptation

Can you read what it says here the moment you see it?

This is a common mistake I see. Decorative font is just harder to read. Yes, I know, it's just so hard to resist. I am not completely against using decorative font in some cases. Sometimes such a font can add a little flavor to your graphic. But use it sparingly and use it wisely. Don't sacrifice readability for pretty letters.

ALL CAPS

Not the Best Choice for Readability

Despite what you might have thought, text in all caps is actually more difficult to read than text in lower case letters. I am not saying it's never okay to use all caps. Just use it when it makes sense to use it.

Outlined text

Looks Unprofessional

Not that you should never use it at all. Much like using all caps, outlined text can be useful in some cases. But for the most part, it is harder to read and can look unprofessional.

A simple solution can go a long way

Less is More

This text is definitely clearer and much easier to read. I recommend using a nice simple font to make your slogans stand out.

That Extra Touch is powerful

We Have a Winner

That little extra touch can really make your t-shirt stand out. The red heart symbol draws your eye in, creating an interesting balance between image and text.
That's what we want.
