    Tabata's ROCK!

I've loved doing them with body weight exercise, kettlebells, plyoboxes, and more. Awesome videos - I think I enjoy learning and being inspired by Steve Maxwell the most.

Here is a recent post of mine about a tabata workout - 12 killer minutes.
    http://cubedwellerfitness.com/2011/02/twelve-minute-killer-kettlebell-tabatas/

I also tried doing 30/30 breakdown which isn't really true to Tabata form, but another great extension of interval training.

Some friends of my mom have undergone this exercise training. Mom has tried it for about 6 months, but she usually do yoga exercises every morning. She's 46 years old now, but she's more conscious in maintaining a better body shape than me. Last year, she went to Los Angeles. Breast augmentation and juvederm (Los Angeles-based) are the common cosmetic services there. She went there to enhance her breast with her trusted surgeon. That's why today, she's active in any outdoors activity to maintain her good shape.

I'm 15, male, 137 lbs. I am doing tabata 2 or 3 times a week, and every other day i am weight training. Today is tabata day, i was thinking i'd do the 8-10 set tabata workout with body weight burpees with push ups, as many reps as i can with within the 20 seconds. Would this be enough to call it my tabata workout for the day or do i need to do more today to get the sped up metabolism results?

The Information is Extremely Valuable, there are so many Different Exercise that can be done in your Home or Dwelling without going to a Gym! Plus you mention some of the Equipment that is used is safe to use at home! Thank you so for sharing this!!!

Plus there's nothing like getting your Heart Rate up and Getting a Good Sweat going!!!
  • Patrick Oct 21, 2010 @ 4:02 pm | delete
Seems easy enough and similar to HIIT sessions, but done in less time. One thing - must be careful with people who are out of shape or who have heart problems. This could literally kill them, especially now that people are watching all these fitness reality shows where people are doing highly advanced workouts. They convince themselves that they can do it too without progressing into it. Best advice is start at an "easy" vigorous pace then gradually work into 90-100% sprints and/or no rest periods in between lifts if using weighted exercises. Also make sure to do a thorough warm up (ACSM recommends at least 5 minutes of cardio to warm up the entire body) before getting your heart rate up close to max levels. Good luck and keep training!

I'm a 68 year old woman and have been working out with kettlebells for the last 18months. The intensity and reps is up to me - sometimes only 10 minutes with squats/dynamic lift, or swings, or one arm swings etc. definitely a great workout. This combined with my trainer sessions, doing dynamic squats etc. plus lunges with one foot in the trx give the greatest workout.
  • ChristopherPickard Oct 17, 2010 @ 6:12 pm | delete
My trainer introduced me to Tabata training a couple of months before going on holliday. He had me do 4 sets of two different exercises, using the 20 seconds on, 10 seconds rest. Then I rested a minute and tackled a second set of 2 different exercises, then a third. It got me in shape pretty fast.

jag, I looked for an opportunity to contact you in a direct way, since I don't believe in anything that could come across as public flaming. Since it doesn't seem te be present, I'll have to contact you this way (I don't even mind if this doesn't get posted, I just want to "clear the air")..

    - I asked for it? Since when is this personal? If you have a reason to rectify my comment, please do so! I'm wiling to learn... are you? Don't you think there's a reason for my post?

Well... here it is: the reason I came up with Tabata 4x +1 a week, is because this is how the original study was performed. That original study lead to the results you mention, using sprint training, instead of strenth-related training. Therefore, I think it's only fair to mention those parameters (with "be correct", I only meant this ommission actually). I did make a mistake with the 170% obviously... I meant 170% of the speed that brings you to your VO2 max.

I did not deny that you warned people not to think too easy about Tabata (yes, I did read the entire lens...). The goal of my comment was to stress that the "real" Tabata is incredibly hard. The first part of the lens might make people overenthousiastic. Maybe I'm too precise when it comes to using the term Tabata... in that case: sorry for that.

You're absolutely right when stating any kind of interval training is WAY more effective than the classic approach.
  • TakeItFromMe Aug 17, 2010 @ 2:53 am | delete
Never heard of tabata training before this.....great lens
  • Jan Jul 29, 2010 @ 2:45 pm | delete
The "tabata" described here leaves out something important...

    - during the exercise, you'll have to get to 170% of VO2 Max! It's extremely hard (I want to say impossible, but I'm not sure on that) to get to that level with barbells, bodyweight exercises, kettlebells etc.
    - train 5 times a week: 4x Tabata, 1x steady state cardio (long run for example)
    - train for at least 6 weeks to get the mentioned results

Tabata is not meant for beginners... a 4 minute training sounds wonderful, but the vast majority of people will not be able to safely perform the "real"' Tabata.

If you want to mention Tabata... be correct!!!

Very comprehensive lens on Tabata training.

While I've been using Tabata for high intensity interval training for a long time, I've recently starting experimenting with Tabata style training using high intensity resistance (HIRT) training.

You're probably already familiar with HIIT, but HIRT is relatively new (at least just starting to hit mainstream). I wrote up an article about it on my blog at:

I am really starting to think that this whole "weight loss" focus is wrong. We need to be focused on "healthy living" and then everything else will follow...(like natural weight loss, longer life, cleaner arteries (heart health), better skin, and generally happier life)
That, to me, makes a whole lot more sense!

While tabata training is a great and highly effective method of getting in your cardio, the only problem is that many people simply don't work hard enough. If you're using appropriate intensity, it can work great. If not, you're getting the worst of all worlds as you're not only not working hard, but you're working for a minimum amount of time. Intensity *has* to be kept high...
