Tabatha's Salon Takeover : Shear Genius : Tabatha Rocks

Tabatha Coffey started out as an assistant in a local salon at age 14. A year later, she entered a four-year apprenticeship program to learn more. Later, she moved to London to continue her training for the next three years.

Coffey has since opened her own salon, Industrie Hair Gurus in Ridgewood, New Jersey.

Coffey was first introduced to American audiences when she became a contestant in the Bravo reality show Shear Genius, hosted by actress Jaclyn Smith.

She quickly earned a reputation for her outspokenness and intensity. She was a front-runner in the competition, winning most of the challenges during her stay, but she was eliminated in the sixth episode. Coffey later won $10,000 as the show's Fan Favorite.

In 2008, Coffey was approached by Bravo to star in the reality series Tabatha's Salon Takeover in which she uses her hairdressing and business expertise and edgy style to assist salons in danger of closing.

In 2011, Coffey published a book referred to as, "Part memoir, part business manual, and part coaching guide on achieving self-acceptance and love. It's Not Really About the Hair teaches you that it's all right to be who you are, stand up for what you believe in, and do what makes you happy without being defined by others."

Fans of the hit Bravo show Tabatha's Salon Takeover tune in for the straight-shooting, unvarnished commentary of its ballsy, stylish, and savvy star. Though millions admire Tabatha Coffey's unflinching honesty and never-say-die attitude, some do not and have even taken to name-calling.

Refusing to let others define her, she has reclaimed the word "bitch," transforming it to fit the person she is: Brave, Intelligent, Tenacious, Creative, and Honest.

In It's Not Really About the Hair, this deeply private woman shares the experiences of her own life to encourage you to get in touch with your own inner bitch. Tabatha reveals how she used her strength and openness to help define her signature look, personal relationships, life choices, and tenacious work ethic-one that in her own words likens her to "a pit bull with a bone."

Here are the people and the circumstances that have led her to a place of honesty, self-assurance, satisfaction, and success-from her tough-minded mum to her famous mentors, her peers, and clients.

Part memoir, part business manual, and part coaching guide on achieving self-acceptance and love, It's Not Really About the Hair teaches you that it's all right to be who you are, stand up for what you believe in, and do what makes you happy without being defined by others.

Tabatha Coffey's raw, funny, shocking, and always inspirational story will encourage you to celebrate the long-lasting and most important beauty of all-the true beauty that is you.

Tabatha's Salon Takeover - Hair Salon Business Makeovers by Tabatha Coffey

"I'm tough; I'm talented; I'm taking over," says Tabatha Coffey, hairstylist, hair salon owner, and host of Tabatha's Salon Takeover. It's her bold signature statement at the beginning of every episode of her reality TV show.

Tabatha's Salon Takeover (Bravo), a one-hour weekly program, first aired in 2008. It is similar to Kitchen Nightmares (Fox), which premiered in 2007. After Gordon Ramsay started rescuing failing restaurants, Tabatha Coffey started rescuing failing hair salons.

The distressed salons are typically in such deep financial trouble they are in danger of closing. It could be months or even weeks before they are shut down.

"I had to file personal bankruptcy last week," an emotional salon owner told her staff at a meeting on one episode. They all started crying--both the men and women.

Can they be saved? Who will rescue them?

Tabatha Coffey, 43, is a petite woman with short blonde hair, an Australian accent, and a strong, made-for-reality-tv personality. She leveraged her hair salon, Industrie Hair Gurus in Ridgewood, New Jersey, into a spot on Shear Genius, the competitive reality show for hairstylists. She then leveraged her success and popularity on Shear Genius into her own show.

The New York Times described Coffey as "unfailingly blunt." Variety called the ambitious hairdresser who transforms a salon in one short week: "a gunslinger with platinum-blond bangs and a dominatrix disposition." Her own boss at Bravo said: "She's funny, tells it like it is, a little mean, and she knows what she's talking about!"

Each episode of Tabatha's Salon Takeover begins with Coffey meeting the salon owner. After a brief introduction, which notes the salon location and how long the owner has been in business, they watch hidden-camera footage at the troubled salon.

The Takeover

Tabatha Coffey shows up at the salon. The staff were not told she would be visiting, but they instantly recognize her, and then it hits them why she is there. She causes nervous excitement or fear, because they know her reputation. She has a no-nonsense attitude and she can be brutal. Coffey announces she is taking over the salon and takes the owner's keys.

The Inspection

Coffey is given a tour of the salon. She finds dust, dirt, and hair--or even a huge, dead cockroach--which she deems "unacceptable."

Staff Meeting

Coffey, who has already had a one-on-one meeting alone with the owner to discuss the salon, leads a staff meeting without the owner present. The staff reveal what they think about the owner and the problems at the salon. They are asked to be brutally honest and talk behind their boss's back without reservation. The owner is blamed for most of the problems and lack of leadership.

The Assessment

Coffey cancels all the hairdressers' appointments for the week, but sends in her own hair models. She wants to get a close look at the cutting and coloring methods of the staff. She feels free to criticize them openly in front of their clients and teach them the correct techniques.

The Makeover

The hair salon gets an extreme makeover. Coffey doesn't consult with the owner or staff on their taste in color and decor; she makes all the decisions herself. The layout is changed to make it look bigger and more appealing to new clients. All walls get fresh paint. Furniture is moved or replaced. Everything is organized carefully so the salon looks very clean and very professional. When the new look is unveiled the owner and staff gush at the exciting transformation.

The Reopening

The hairdressers have a full work day in their clean new environment. Coffey wants to see which staff have listened to her advice and learned what she taught them.

Final Recommendations

The conclusion is a final meeting with the owner and entire staff to discuss the recommendations, including: promotions, demotions, firings, and probations. Coffey suggests who should be the head stylist and coach others. She recommends stylists be put on probation if they are teachable but lack skills. If their skill level is so low or she feels they do not want to learn, she recommends they should be fired. Her advice is not always heeded. Coffey wanted a hairdresser who had insulted her to be fired, but the owner gave her a second chance to keep her job.

Surprise Visit

Ms. Coffey returns several weeks later. Did the changes work? Do the owner and staff enjoy working at the salon more than before she changed it? What is the latest financial situation? Is the salon still in business? She may not have been a business consultant for failing salons before the show, but they are usually turned around and become success stories.

Why is the show popular?

Television programming has been saturated with makeover shows in recent years, but many kinds of makeovers are still popular. There are wardrobe transformations; home makeover programs; weight loss shows; and Gordon Ramsay's restaurant business show. America loves change.

Coffey is tough and comparable to TV curmudgeons like Gordon Ramsay (Hell's Kitchen); Simon Cowell (American Idol); and Patti Stanger (Millionaire Matchmaker). She doesn't pull any punches. She will look people in the eye and calmly but forcefully state her strong opinions. Sometimes she is so harsh she makes girls cry. Offended staff, however, hit back with expletives. They get their own opportunity to slam Coffey if they feel hurt by her words or actions. The criticism may start behind her back speaking just to the camera, but then escalate to a full-scale open confrontation in the middle of the salon.

For example, after a veteran female hairdresser at the Allure Salon in Cocoanut Grove, Florida was criticized for her flashy wardrobe and coloring incompetence, she swore at Coffey right in her face.

Tabatha Coffey has a strong enough personality to carry the show. She is tough like Gordon Ramsay, but she doesn't swear as often, nor does she get as angry. Although she has much more self-control, her demeanor is often strident, and the viewer is left to imagine how many times she has rolled her eyes. Coffey doesn't express a lot of sympathy. She never holds back when she wants to take somebody to task--from the owner at the top to the rookie stylist at the bottom.

The drama of Tabatha's Salon Takeover is first found in the extremes of how unbelievably badly a salon operates and the hairdressers' lack of technical skills. It is then all about the intensity of Coffey's confrontations plus the emotions and backlash against her. Next it is the creativity of the salon makeover which gets our attention followed by the anticipation of staff being fired. And, ultimately, it is our interest in whether or not Coffey is successful and the salon was saved from the brink of bankruptcy.

The first season had eight episodes and the second season had ten. The third season starts on Monday, December 6.

Why Hair Salon Marketing is Critical to Your Success

Salon Marketing : Hair Salon Marketing

Marketing is something which many spa or salon owners neglect. There are a lot of people who look at marketing as an expense rather than as a means of generating revenue, which is exactly what an effective marketing campaign is. In order to make the most of your marketing, you'll need to keep on top of things and review what kind of results you're getting in order to keep up with or better yet, ahead of your competition.

Look carefully at what you're doing to market your salon now and see what's getting results for you and what isn't. Look at the cost for each marketing campaign in terms of the return on investment. For instance, are your radio ads generating new business for your salon or are your direct mail efforts having more of an impact? It's all too easy to fall into the habit of using just one type of advertising - which often means losing out on opportunities to reach your target market. The idea is to stick with what works and scale back on what doesn't.

Email Marketing

Ask your clients for their contact information - including their email address. Many businesses find that a monthly newsletter delivered by email can be an effective tool for generating repeat business. You can use your newsletter to remind your clients about new services you offer, remind them about seasonally popular procedures like hair removal and the like. You can also send the people on your email list occasional messages about specials, open appointments and the like.

Cross Marketing

You may want to do cross marketing with other local businesses; it's better to do some marketing along with businesses which do not offer exactly the same services as your spa does. If you know some local hairstylists, this can be a particularly rewarding cross promotion for both their business and your own.

Take Advantage Of Technology

Your salon very likely uses a computerized system to manage bookings. You can actually use these systems to take your marketing efforts to the next level by using their ability to produce reports; these can tell you if there are facilities which aren't being used to their full potential as well as which of your clients haven't been in for some time and should be followed up with.

Networking

Getting out and making a name for yourself is incredibly important. Participate in your community, especially in areas where you'll meet people who are in your target market. People tend to choose to go to people they know for services like yours - when you network with people in your city, you'll be able to make business contacts, get the word out about your business and even bring in some new clients.

Remember, it's not enough to just put a sign out front; you need to put some effort into marketing your salon business and you have to keep up with how your marketing and advertising efforts are working for you. Make your marketing accountable and keep it constantly evolving in order to create a foundation for the continued growth of your spa or salon.
