Mix New Dinnerware with Old Favorites

Add Carefully Chosen New China

Butterfly Meadow by LenoxEspecially for a larger gathering, your vintage dinnerware collection might need some additions. And if you have a party coming soon, it can be easier to acquire some pretty new things to mix and match with your existing set of china.

Dessert plates, for example, do not have to match the china for the meal. Usually we clear our table of the lunch or dinner dishes, then bring out clean plates for the coffee and dessert.

Choose colors and motifs that coordinate with your dinnerware, and use dessert plates for a generous serving of something sweet, in beautiful and tasteful style.

Silver Service Adds Elegance

Classic Silverplate Never Out of Style

Reed Barton Silver ServiceOld silver pieces have a wonderful patina that makes a vintage table. Small pieces like demitasse spoons and napkin rings, middle size creamers and sugars, or large coffee pots -- any or all can grace your table with beauty.

These pieces are available in the secondary marketplace. Watch for condition, especially for places where the silver plate has worn through to the base metal, and especially if you plan to use these pieces.

If you cannot have a vintage set, or grandma's, then add some new silver pieces to your collection and let them join your parties and special events, like wedding showers, anniversary parties, christening luncheons, or quiet, intimate tea parties with just a few friends.

Use silver cleaner, and silver cloth to store your pieces, and they will last for many, many years.

I'm not in buying mode these days (I'm unemployed); I was actually thinking of selling some China my Uncle bought in Korea during the war (not sure where it was made but I have no use for it, I actually have two sets).

great lens, we have a mixture of stuff from over the years...
  • lestroischenes Nov 11, 2011 @ 4:45 am | delete
I'm afraid I'm not really up to much table dressing. I've bought new, white Limoges porcelain for my Bed and Breakfast guests, but for the family just everyday ware has to do. These tables look lovely.
  • veryirie Nov 3, 2011 @ 1:19 pm | delete
I mix and match my dinner dishes always. Makes it easier in case one piece gets broken and it looks really pretty.

I love antique dishes but buying modern vintage styled dishes is an excellent idea for health reasons. Many old dishes contain lead or other contaminents in the whereas modern vintage styled dishware has all the beauty and meets the high health standards of the government today. Beautiful dinnerware.

After years of eating meals with a plate on my lap on the couch, we have gone back to sitting at the dining room table and eating our meals properly, and it's so much better. Even better with some nice dinnerwear. Nice lens and the book looks like it has some great ideas.

A bowl and dessert dishes that my grandmother had in her china cabinet. I remember clearly her telling me she wanted to give something to me, for some reason those dishes though rather simple and plain intrigued me, they are now in my china cabinet...reminding me of her.

Vintage china and glass need not cost too much, and it certainly makes food and drink look really attractive, and different. Wonderful Lens!

I love mixing vintage glass serving dishes from my grandmothers along with my mothers china and some of my own newer dishes. Enjoyed your lens.

I've been using my grandmother's linens and dishes with newer pieces for years. I love to mix it up when I create a table setting - plus, with a large extended family I don't have much choice!
  • KimGiancaterino Jan 18, 2011 @ 10:49 pm | delete
I have a big set of Fiestaware in many colors and it's fun to add patterned vintage pieces to the mix. What a great idea for holidays! Thanks for the ideas.

A lovely lens - big thumbs up and Like from me. I always have a divine dinner set and table cloths ... life is just nicer with lovely things like that in your life. My best find ever was a gorgeous Edwardian dinner set with the works. I adored it but it was lost to me many years ago, which I really regret. But new designs always come around, and I love the one I use at the moment!
