How to put a table of contents on your squidoo lens.

Ranked #29,418 in Education, #532,678 overall

Have you ever wondered how someone was able to create a table of contents on their squidoo lens.

Well, I am going to help you through the process of creating a table of contents for you very own lenses. It is a pretty easy process once you have the basics down.
This lens is not going to require a table of contents, but I recommend you check out my other lens to see an example of how a table of contents can be implemented to make navigation a little easier.

Basic table of contents for your squidoo lens

It is ok if you know absolutely nothing about HTML.

First things first, you will need to create a hyperlink. If you do not know the code for a hyperlink just copy the code below and paste it into wordpad so you have it available for your reference, as we will be using it alot.

Hyperlink-

<a href="url">Text you want displayed</a>

Now that you have the code copied and pasted into wordpad or notepad, you will need to open a new page, or tab, and go to your desired lens (obviously in edit mode).

Next you will need to add a new text/write module. Also, reorder your new module so that it is somewhere toward the top of your lens. If you really feel the need to put a table of contents any further down then be my guest.

Now, you should have a nice blank text/write module. I would definitely recommend giving this module a name. It is always a good idea to name your modules. It could be something as plain and simple as "Table of Contents."

Next we will actually get to the building part. Go to your notepad and copy the code for a hyperlink (highlight/ctrl-C)

Then go into your new text/write module and paste the code right into it (ctrl-V).

You will now want to replace the part within the code that says "URL" with the actual url of your page, followed by the extra text provided in the following example:

http://www.squidoo.com/yourlens/#module0000000
(I find it easiest to just copy and past this then alter it accordingly).

The next step will require you to scroll down to the first module that you wish to appear on your table of contents. At the top of this module are two arrows right next to the word "Edit". Just hover over either arrow and look down to your progress bar. Here you should see something that looks like this:
http://www.squidoo.com/yourlens/blahblah/1234567/3

The seven numbers that I have highlighted for you are the numbers that you will want to put a the end of the hyperlink we created in your table of contents. The number following the module number is not needed, as it simply designates where that specific module is relative to the rest of your lens. 1,2,3,4 and so on down the page.

Ok, so you have the hyperlink all setup to link to your first module. All you have left to do is change the part of the hyperlink that says "text to be displayed" so that it will display whatever you want it to.

Just rinse and repeat and you have yourself a "Table of Contents."

Some advantages to the table of contents

why you should use it on your lens.

Some people complain about their lens being too long and think that it tends to make the visitor feel overwhelmed. Well, the table of contents can solve this problem. I believe it is also a better solution than breaking your lens up into different categories, and making serperate lenses out of them.

*Hint- I like to add another link at the bottom of all my other modules with a prompt to return to the table of contents. This can be done the exact same way the table of contents is built. This will enable your reader to navigate to a specific area on your lens; Then, at any point in time, they can browse your other topics.

Once again, you can see an example of this as used on One Of My other lenses.

I prefer the table of contents

there is another toc on the lens.

If you didn't know, there is somewhat of a table of contents listed in the left-hand column of every lens. It is listed under the title "see what's here." Now, since it is already there, why build one like I have described? Well, First off the "see what's here" list only shows certain modules, it doesn't seem to break down all of the content fon you lens. The main reason is because the table of contents made from a text/write module stands out more, and can be modified to display however you want it. I think the see what's here section was poorly designed and placed making it an under-utilized portion of the lenses. Maybe this will be one of the things that will be revised when the new lens layouts arrive. (if that ever happens, it was just a rumor I heard).

See if you can figure this one out.
