A Deeper Dive into Tablets

type=textPreviously, a "tablet" of paper and a pen would be carried into meetings for work and classes for school. Because of its limited capabilities, you also needed access to a calendar, a phone and a laptop computer with internet access if you wanted to get some real work done. Today's tablet devices cover all those bases and more.

The first thing you will notice is the large tablet screen displaying crisp color. These screens range from 7inches to beyond 10inches and are not only visually appealing but reliably functional. The ultra-sensitive touch screen is used for most of the tablet's functions. It replaces a physical keyboard with an exceptional on-screen keyboard as well as custom virtual keys for every application on the device. Even the tablet's position is a control. "This side up" is not a factor since you can hold the device in any direction and it will always turn your screen right side up! Imagine a racecar driving game where the entire device is your steering wheel as the game responds to you twisting and turning the tablet.

Applications, Games & More!

type=textAll tablet devices come with the basics in terms of applications. They all include a note taking application, a contact list/address book, calendar and internet browser to name a few. But possibilities hardly begin there. Depending on what brand of tablet it is, you have access to their version of an applications forum where you can choose from literally thousands of applications and games. These items range in price from free and up. Applications range from simple calculators to real-time navigational devices offering a satellites' view of your location. You can play games or watch movies. You can surf the web or maintain your favorite social networking site. Finally, a device that does it all and comes in a very convenient size.

Platform Discussion

A mobile operating system, also known as a mobile OS, mobile software platform or a handheld operating system, is the operating system that controls a mobile device or information appliance-similar in principle to an operating system such as Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux distributions that controls a desktop computer or laptop.

Top choices: Android from Google Inc., BlackBerry OS from RIM, iOS from Apple Inc., Symbian OS from the Symbian Foundation, Windows Phone from Microsoft, and webOS from HP.

Android & iOS?

Steve-Chanone says:

i think for the iOS there is a real quality of applications but they are more hard to find. in the opposite, using a Galaxy Tab for example under Android is a lot more easy, but that could lead to bad surprises

iOS then Android

Can I Make Phone Calls?

type=textBut wait, it does not make voice calls. So much for the perfect device right? Wrong.

True, tablets are not equipped to make calls like a cell phone. Because it isn't one! However, it can use the internet to make calls using a variety of applications that are designed to do so. Some even have both forward and rear facing cameras for video conferencing. You also don't need to pay extra for the voice plan. That's a pretty good deal.

Tablet Poll

Outside of cellphones, more than 90% of Americans polled already carry or would carry a tablet device to be more productive, stay better connected and be efficiently mobile.

Buying a Tablet Device

type=textAre you ready to rush out and buy one yet?

Here are a few things you'll want to know before you fly out the door.

1) What do you plan on using it for? Remember, a tablet allows you to do everything you need/want to do and be mobile doing it. The key is being mobile and having that it is convenient. While it can be done with the help of some accessories, you don't want this device for hours of typing where a physical keyboard is actually more comfortable and ergonomic.

2) Do you need to have internet access everywhere you go? All tablets have Wi-Fi connectivity so that you can enjoy free internet use anywhere there is a Wi-Fi connection at home, work or your favorite coffee shop. Most can be sold as a standalone device with just Wi-Fi. If you require internet access in areas where Wi-Fi is not available, you will want to consider a device that has mobile data capabilities built-in in conjunction with a wireless company you are willing to buy a data plan from. If this is the case, you will what to know how to manage your data usage with applications and harnessing Wi-Fi when you can to save on overage charges.

Finally, 3) How much are you willing to spend? Tablets range from $100 to $1000 depending on brand, storage space and capabilities. Make sure you go to a store with a knowledgeable staff to answer all your questions and pair you up with the best device for you.

Good luck!
