The thought of taffy evokes pleasant memories of a by-gone age when I first discovered this sweet treat at an amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio. Think of the items I've found as taffy or my "sweet treat" that I'm sharing with you. I hope you enjoy!
Taffy is a type of chewy candy that is made by stretching or pulling a sticky mass of boiled sugar, butter, flavorings, and coloring until fluffy. When this process is complete, the taffy is cut into small pastel-colored pieces and wrapped in wax paper to keep it soft.

The Accidental Taffy
Legend has it that Salt Water Taffy received its name by accident. A young candy merchant, opened a taffy stand on the first Atlantic City Boardwalk - then just two steps above sea level. One night a generous tide brought in a lively surf which sprayed sea foam over his establishment and dampened his stock of candy. The next morning, the merchant was dismayed to find his merchandise wet and responded to a girl's request for taffy with a sarcastic but witty, "you mean Salt Water Taffy." Taffy Facts
- Salt water taffy was "invented" in Atlantic City in 1883.
- Confectioners can produce 1,000 pieces of taffy a minute.
- In one day enough pieces of taffy are made to cover about 2/3 of the width of New Jersey; that's about 46 miles.
- America celebrates National Taffy Day May 23rd.
Taffy Recipe
Ingredients: 2 cups sugar, 1-1/2 cups water, 1 cup white corn syrup, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon glycerin, 1 teaspoon flavoring extract, 7 drops food coloring, 2 tablespoons butter.
Directions: Mix sugar, water, corn syrup, salt, and glycerin in a heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil and cook to a temperature of 258 degrees F. Remove from heat and let stand for two to three minutes. Then add flavor extract, color and butter and stir vigorously until butter is melted.
Pour into buttered cookie sheet. Cool until lukewarm taffy can be handled. Begin to stretch and fold over and over until taffy turns paler in color, about 10 minutes.
Roll taffy into long rope. Cut into individual pieces and wrap in wax paper.
