How I Discovered Tagalog Storybooks

A few years ago I was looking for a way to encourage the love of reading in a reluctant reader. She lacked confidence in her English skills and I had to find a way to build her confidence. Fortunately I found a series of storybooks written in Tagalog as well as English. Those first books set her on a path of discovering how wonderful books can be. Today she's an avid reader, has more confidence, and has started writing her own stories.

A Short Note on the terms Filipino and Tagalog

Philippine FlagFilipino is one of two official languages of the Philippines. It is practically the Tagalog language under another name. The term "Filipino" may also be used as a noun referring to a person, or as an adjective describing something as being of the Philippines. On this page I will use "Tagalog" to refer to the language and "Filipino" to refer to the people or the culture.

Reading, Language and Culture

One of the ways I learned English and Filipino was reading. Reading is my primary entertainment and mode of learning. Reading everything I could get my hands on not only taught me language, it also taught me about different cultures. I believe that having books in Tagalog is important not only here in our country, but all around the world where there are Filipino families. Books can help Filipino children living abroad connect with their roots and find their identity. Books can also help people from other countries learn more about Filipino culture and language.

Adarna House

A publisher of bilingual books

Adarna House is a publisher of bilingual (English and Tagalog) storybooks. The books I mentioned above were all Adarna House books. I believe it is important to support Filipino publishers. We need more Filipino books, whether they are written in English, Tagalog, or other Philippine languages.

Adarna Books we own

Adarna BooksMr. Beetle's Many Rooms - Mr. Beetle finds a home, but soon uninvited guests move in! This is my favorite. The idea of different creatures sharing a plant as a home appeals to me.

Bru-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-bru-hi-hi-hi-hi-hi - Can an old woman and young girl become friends?

Si Pagong at si Matsing - Pagong (Tortoise) and Matsing (Monkey) engage in a battle of wits.

Ang Pambihirang Sombrero - Mia finds an interesting old hat in her grandmother's ttrunk.

Ang Mahiyaing Manok - Too shy to crow in the morning, what's a rooster to do?

Si Emang Engkantada at ang Tatlong Haragan - Three kids learn the value of caring for the environment.

Tahanan Books

Tahanan Books is another publisher of children's books (as well as books for adults). Their books capture the unique flavor of Filipino culture.

I think that it is extremely useful to be able to speak another language or more.

I am bilingual and also know a bit of a few other languages.

Unfortunately I have only learned English, and very few words in other languages. But I really would love to learn another language and admire those that are bi and multiligual!
