Tag Cloud Info Why Tags are so important !

 

Tags are what Squidoo uses to find lenses in searches (see the little box at top right that says Find a Lens on ..)
But that is not the only purpose for tags.

Search Engines look at your lens and as part of that they look at the tags. They treat tags as if they were meta tags ( a form of keyword description)
So to all effects and purposes,tags = keywords.

Choosing Tags 

You have a subject that your lens/website is about

The PRIMARY TAG must be about your subject.
(To choose a primary tag go to my lens on seo and keywords which has detailed instructions)
Or go to Overture suggestions and type in the main subject word and you'l get a list of keywords that relate to it.
Try to chosse a two or three word tag for your primary keyword.
Take the next 10 keywords that look really applicable to your lens/site.
Use those as your starter keywords (you'll see why in a minute ..)
Click on Save and these will come up on the lens as your keyworkds.
Squidoo then does some clever stuff and offers suggestions based on your keywords and your site.
For the moment just ignore these as we aill try to find better ones.

PLEASE RESIST the temptation to use keyword of non-relative subjects This will just get your site not listed (especially from the larger search engines).

Refining Your Tags 

(this is the clever bit that I really ought to be charging you for !)

When you have published your lens,
Type your main (primary subject) subject into the search box at the top of the lens.
Squidoo will then show you all the other lenses that use that tag. Ooooh !
This does 3 good things for you (maybe 4 !)
First is the most important.
To the right hand side of the search results box is a set of keywords/tags in blue text.
Make a note of these.
Now click on each of those tags in order and each time you do that,squidoo puts up all the related tags for each of those keywords !
(warning you will end up with hundreds of tags for each popular subject doing this.)
Now you have this huge list what should you do with it ?
Go back to the main subject and look at each RIVAL lens - on one of the columns is a list of the tags THEY use.
If the tags aren't on your big list then add them in a different coloured pen to show which ones are the most popular. This is going to be your MASTER list.

OK - the tags that appear next to the search results are called a TAG CLOUD.
A TAG CLOUD is simply all the related keywords to a sunject. When you click on the tag, this gives you a list of the sites/lenses that use that tag.
THE BIGGER THE TAG LETTERS ARE SHOWN (and this is important), The more lenses/sites will appear when you click on that tag.

So where do we go from here ?
In the big much wider world of the Internet, tag clouds appear. Big floaty fluffy ones that drift aimlessly around ..well something like that.

Lets now go out of Squidoo (in a new page) and visit Technorati or del.ico.us
And here we will see the real world use of tags and tag clouds. Its to add to sites like these so they can in turn show their subscribers related website/lenses.

http://www.del.icio.us.com gives you even BETTER uses of your tags - you can make clouds of your own tags and even CLOUD BUNDLES of tags related to specific subjects - like photography or art etc or even clouds of all the tags on all your lenses.

You can then publish your clouds on your external website or BLOGSITE (even Better) which in turn will get you indexed by search engines and give you even more search engine results. WOW ! (squidoo doesn't seem to like tag clouds so you can only point to an external website for these.)

Now you've got me here what will you do with me ...?

Tag and Ping ! (its like a game but you can't always win !) 

Now you have lots of tags to play with and test on your lens to see which gives the best results...
its time to unleash your mighty lens on the world.

Go to technorati.com and del.icio.us and list your lens by clicking on the left hand side of your lens (you have to join but that's free)
Then your lens is listed with those sites - you have to write a bit about the lens - make it sound great.
Then do the same at digg.com

Now the BEST BIT - there are Blog listing companies that send details of your blog (hang on I thought we were talking about lenses - well to a blog listing company a lens LOOKS like a blog so we can avail ourselves of their free services)

The ones I use mostly are www.pingomatic.com and www.pingoat.com - these are free and will send details of your updated lens to a dozen of so major blog listing services from pingomatic anf dozens and dozens more at pingoat. The blog listing services they send to do it again to lots more !
THAT'S NICE !

The only extra thing you have to do to vastly promote your lens is to sign up for several free blogs and write a bit about your lens (and update that blog every couple of days) Make the blog title relevant to your subject for best results and send the blog through pingomatic and pingoat in the same way.
