Fibromyalgia & T'ai Chi

Fibromyalgia is a modern epidemic, a chronic pain condition affecting 6 to 8 percent of the U.S. population. T'ai Chi has been recommended by some health professionals as a very desirable adjunct therapy for sufferers.

Many of those suffering from Fibromyalgia use Tai Chi exercise as a safe, fibromyalgia natural remedy. Tai Chi is one of the most practical exercise systems for the sufferers of fibromyalgia, helping overcome and cope with the symptoms.

T'ai Chi Good for People with Fibromyalgia

Peter Stein, MD, a Greenbrae, Calif., rheumatologist, says he finds T'ai Chi especially good for people with fibromyalgia and those with a high level of muscle pain. "People in pain often can't even do yoga," he says. "They need something milder and more soothing, and tai chi is very good for relieving pain."

Philip Mease, MD, a Seattle rheumatologist, says people who say they don't like exercise enjoy and stick to tai chi. "When people enjoy it, they are more likely to continue to exercise alone, or in a group, which I think is more fun,"he says.

Tai Chi Changes Fibromyalgia Patient's Life

Not only did Jan Shields have Fibromyalgia, she was also diagnosed with Systemic Lupus, Narcolepsy and Rheumatoid Arthritis, suffered a stroke in 1993 and a heart attack 1998. She fell asleep while driving with her three sons in the car, leading her to decide to remand her children to their father's care. It was from this desperate place that Jan summoned the energy for a change in her life and answered an ad to become a Tai Chi instructor.

A pretty bold move for someone who had to hide the cane she used to walk with in the car to attend the interview. It was there that Jan met a man who would change her life - her Tai Chi instructor, Master Kelly.

He explained that students were charged a fee to learn to become Tai Chi instructors, but since Jan was partially paralyzed from her stroke, he waived that fee. From that point on, Jan began her journey on a slow but life-altering path.

She practiced every minute she could stay awake, yet even still, those around her would graduate to the next level and she would fail. "It seemed like I was trying to climb a mountain. I would cry a while, sleep a while, and practice Tai Chi a while," said Jan.

Needless to say, her determination paid off. Fourteen months after her fateful interview with Master Kelly, Jan is a certified Tai Chi instructor with a weekly following of 300 students. Her successful career has afforded her a home that she now shares with her children, the ability to put her cane in the closet and the added benefit of losing 77 pounds.

After her odyssey, even Jan has a hard time accepting all that has happened: "If it wasn't all medically documented and I didn't live through every last minute of it, it would be hard for me to believe this wasn't a bad dream with a really good ending."

How is Tai Chi a Fibromyalgia Natural Remedy?

A great benefit of practicing Tai Chi for fibromyalgia patients is to foster a calm and tranquil mind, focusing on the precise execution of sequenced movements. Learning to do the movements correctly provides a practical avenue for learning about such things as balance, alignment, fine-scale motor control, rhythm of movement, the genesis of movement from the body's vital center, and so on. Thus the practice allows the patient to stand, walk, move, and run in a controlled pain-free manner. Many patients practicing tai chi notice benefits in terms of correcting poor postural alignment, or movement patterns which can help with the pain and tension associated with FMS. Furthermore, the meditative nature of the exercise is calming and relaxing in itself.
