T'ai Chi Chuan has been compared to a string of pearls. A pearl is formed by an oyster out of a need to deal with an irritating object. For humans, this irritation can have a physical, mental or spiritual basis, maybe all three.

T'ai Chi evolved, like a pearl, to deal with these irritations. A grain of sand is surrounded in defense by the oyster to form a smooth pearl. A threat or need to our individual self is made into a movement of such beauty by the T'ai Chi principles that almost everybody feels a deep sense of awe. These separate moments are strung together to make T'ai Chi Chuan, as practiced by most people today."

The full and formal title is T'ai-Chi Ch'uan (pronounced "tie-jee chwan,") the latter word meaning simply "fist" or "boxing." The term t'ai-chi is derived from a concept of Chinese philosophy meaning "supreme ultimate." Philosophically, T'ai-chi is said to be the primary principle of all things and is represented by a circle divided into light and dark aspects, representing the yang and yin concepts, which reflect opposite attributes such as male and female, activity and inactivity, firmness and softness, light and darkness, and positive and negative. Through the complementary interaction of yin and yang sprang the five elements--fire, water, earth, wood, and metal...T'ai-chi was named for an ultimate philosophical principle because its early proponents felt it expresses an ultimate physical principle.

Chinese say that whoever practices T'ai-chi, correctly and regularly, twice a day over a period of time will gain the pliability of a child, the health of a lumberjack, and the peace of mind of a sage....Stressing slow respiration and balanced, relaxed postures, it certainly promotes deep breathing, digestion, the functioning of the internal organs, and blood circulation. And perhaps there is also basis for the claim that T'ai-chi can relieve, if not actually cure, neurasthnia, high blood pressure, anemia, tuberculosis, and many other maladies.

How to Learn T'ai Chi

Tips from Dr. Paul Lam
Learning t'ai-chi can be a most enjoyable and rewarding experience. T'ai-chi is probably the most effective exercise for a holistic approach to health. It will improve your health and fitness, and help you to relax.

It's important to start out right on your journey to learning tai chi. Since we're all different, our approaches to learning tai chi will differ. Each of you will find an approach that will be enjoyable, fulfilling, and will help to improve your health.

Below are some good approaches for beginners to follow:

1. Try to understand why you want to learn tai chi. What is your purpose? To improve health or to practice a martial art?

2. Find a suitable teacher. There are many different tai chi teachers with different styles of teaching and forms of tai chi. Go to the teacher's class, meet with other students and meet with the teacher to find out if the teacher has experience for your needs. For example, if you want to practice tai chi to help your arthritis, then find out if your teacher has been teaching some people who have arthritis.

Some teachers emphasize the martial art aspects of t'ai-chi. If you're interested strictly in improving your health, then that teacher's not right for you. Some teachers use modern coach-like approaches to work with students; others use strict discipline methods. Figure out before you commit, what style of teaching works best for you.

Find out what style of t'ai-chi the instructor teaches.

3. Be persistent in your practise. After you choose a method, or combined methods to learn, be sure you practise what you learn. Give yourself time to absorb and to get over the initial awkward stage so that you can enjoy t'ai-chi and its many benefits. It usually takes a beginner two or three months to overcome this phase before t'ai-chi becomes most enjoyable.

4. Keep an open mind. Expose yourself to different ideas and different forms of t'ai-chi so that you can compare and find out which one suits you the best.

Above all, have fun and enjoy healthier life style with t'ai-chi!

    I love T'ai Chi! It was the first form of exercise I could do after 13 surgeries in 4 years; 6 of them on my knees. I can't say enough about how beneficial it is. :)

    Great lens! My mother-in-law's doctor has recommended T'ai Chi as an aid for Parkinson's patients. I don't know if she'll do it or not, but I'm trying to encourage her. Thanks for the information!

    Wonderful lens! I've been practicing tai chi for about two years now and did not know there were so many different styles ( I couldn't answer that question), and, I am still on beginner (due to physical limitations), however I have found my health has become much better as a direct result of the work. Range of motion and muscle strength have improved and I breath much more deeply. Oh, and stress is a thing of the past. I sleep better, and overall just love this. What else can give so much benefit with such a safe and achievable practice? I had thought I was not going to be able to 'do' any kind of exercise anymore, and this I can do!

    Great stuff Pat! Nuthin' like having a septuagenarian T'ai Chi Master whup yer heiny. Ouch! Oh, not literally, but, dang, he can kick his hand above his head while balancing on one foot (you saw him do it)! I aspire to that kind of fitness level in my croning years. Thanks for this lovely lens.
