Tajiks have a long and rich musical history, shared with the other Persian-speaking peoples of Iran, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan. This Lens is an introduction to some of the great traditional and popular music of Tajikistan.
Traditional Tajik Music
Tajik traditional and classical music draws heavily on influences from the great Persian poets such as Rumi and Hafiz. Tajiki, like Dari and Parsi, is a Central Asian dialect of the Iranian national language, Farsi, and all Persian-speaking peoples consider the great Persian poets their own.
Tojikam Man
A traditional patriotic song sung by the classical Tajik singer Jurabek Murodov and set to a slideshow of images. "Tojikam Man" means "I am Tajik."

The Great Ahmad Zahir
Decades after his death, Ahmad Zahir remains one of the most popular singers in both Tajikistan and his native Afghanistan. He is revered both for his great music and for his political activism. He died in a car crash under mysterious circumstances on June 14, 1979.
