If you have diabetes, your risk of certain complications magnifies. You can greatly reduce (even eliminate in some cases) these problems by carefully monitoring your conditions. There are four extremely important, crucial tests that every diabetic should follow. Consult you physician for more information about each of these.

The Importance of Testing Your Blood Sugar Levels
I begin with what I thinks is the most important thing you can do to help your diabetes control. I personally check my blood sugar a minimum of four times a day. You may not need to do this but you should make it a regular habit. Diabetes does not attack every person the same way. When I began checking my glucose levels on a regular basis, it was a real eye opening experience which greatly helped my diabetic management. This is crucial!
Who needs to check, or have checked, their blood sugar levels? Anyone who has a family histriy of diabetes.
It is all about the levels of sugar in the blood. A pre-diabetic has high levels but not high enough to be diagnosed as a full type 2 diabetic. When a persons blood glucose (amount of sugar in the blood) is shown above the blood glucose normal range for a fasting individual, some level of diabetes is diagnosed.

"This diabetes test measures blood glucose levels over the past 120 days. It's also called the HbA1C test, or glycated hemoglobin test. When there's too much glucose, or blood sugar, in your bloodstream the excess bonds with the blood's hemoglobin (a protein that carries oxygen to your body's cells) and "glycates" it. The more glucose is present, the more hemoglobin becomes glycated. The percentage of glycated hemoglobin in the blood can be measured. Hemoglobin cells have a lifespan of approximately 120 days, so the percentage changes as cells die and are replaced. While the daily blood tests spot check blood sugars at specific points in time, the A1C diabetes test measure your average blood glucose levels over weeks. This helps your doctor to know if and how well your treatment plan is working, and whether your sugars are tightly controlled before and after meals, or when you are sleeping or awake. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends all diabetics have an A1C test twice a year with a target of less than 7% glycated hemoglobin.
