Travel Together!

There are more options in family travel than Disneyland and beach destinations. Those places are great, and my family does make regular treks to the beach and Disneyland. BUT there are so many other possibilities - vacations that will allow you and your children to experience things you've only dreamed of. And by spending this time together, and sharing these experiences, your family will grow closer - much closer than you will standing in a roller coaster ride.

Below are my favorite vacation ideas for families. I hope you will share one of them with your family and that the experience will bring you closer, help you learn a bit more about each other, and give you some great stories to tell for years to come...

My websites

Vacations by Design
This is my website. If you'd like to learn more about what I do, or if you'd like to book a vacation with me, this is the place to go!

Wildlife

If you want to learn about and view wildlife up close and personal, these vacations are for you.
Galapagos Islands with Lindblad Expedtions
There's no place like the Galapagos Islands for getting up close and personal with wildlife. You'll get so close that you can leave your zoom lens at home. Animals in the Galapagos Islands have not been hunted and have no fear of humans. Birds will sit on their nests in the middle of the path and not even flinch as you scoot by, young sea lions will frolic in the water with your children and maybe even try to nibble on their flippers. Be sure to watch your step, though, or you may end up stepping on sunbathing marine iguanas and sea lions.

African safari with Abercrombie and Kent

A safari in Africa is probably one of the most amazing experiences you can share with your children. There's nothing like the sound of a lion's roar, or the the feeling you get when you look up at a giraffe and realize there's no fence between you and it.

Get active!

Heli-hiking with Canadian Mountain Holidays

Never heard of it? Heli-hiking is bound to be one of the best experiences of your life. I've talked to many people who've been to exotic places like Africa, India, China... and they all say that heli-hiking is the most amazing experience of their life.

You'll stay in a luxury lodge in the Rockies enjoying fabulous meals, time in the hot tub or sauna, storytelling around the fire or a spa treatment, if you wish. During the day you'll be taken via helicopter to meadows, lakes, and mountaintops not accessible any other way. You can take an easy stroll, an vigorous hike, or spend the day relaxing at the lodge - it's up to you. There's always something for every activity level.

There aren't words to adequately describe it. The pictures on the website will take your breath away, imagine what the real thing will do!

Small Ship Cruising

Sure, those big ships can be fun, but really, who wants to stanf in line to climb a wall with 3,000 of their new friends?

Small ship cruising is a much more intimate experience with usually only 200 passengers or less per ship. Because the ships are small they can get into areas the larger ships can't - like right up to a glacial waterfall! (one of these companies actually pulls riht up so that a crew member can lean over with a pitcher, fill it up with the clean water, and pass it around so everyone on board can have a taste!) And because there are so few passengers
Riverbarge Excursion Line
I LOVE this company. First, river cruising is one of our favorite vacations. It's so relaxing, slow and peacful. It's great for those of us who suffer from motion sickness - you really can't tell your on water. There were many times that I forgot I was on a cruise until I noticed the trees gliding by out the window.

This company barges along America's rivers. Visiting small towns along the way.

The great thing about this company is how family friendly they are. First, one child 12 or under travels free with 2 full paying adults. Second, additional children get their own cabin at half price. Third, your payment includes all gratuities, all shore excursions, port charges, taxes, all food, soda, coffee tea...!! There's more, but this is supposed to be a short description. Anyone who's planned a family cruise knows how unbelievable these inclusions are. I love this company!!

About ChristyJoy

I am a travel agent and a mother of three. I have a passion for educational travel for kids and adults. (not educational - sitting in a lecture, educational - learning how to track lions in Africa or learning about the past by experiencing life like it was once lived (eating the food, using the tools, etc.)

I also believe that travel can bring families closer together and provide an opportunity to get to know each other in a way that isn't always possible at home with TV, internet, cell phones etc. distracting us.

It is my sincere wish that something on this site will inspire you to spend time getting to know your family and create memories that will last a lifetime.
