Care Of Orchids
Since their introduction during the Victorian era, growing orchids has been a popular hobby, but a lot of people think you need to have extensive gardening experience to adequately take care of orchids. But I must tell you, even the non-experienced can grow orchids! Some require no more care than any other houseplant and with at least 20,000 species of orchids to choose from, growing orchids is something almost anyone should be able to do.
A lot of people feel like they cannot grow orchids at home since orchids are well known for their love of humidity. The humidity level needed depends on the species of orchid, but most need 40 to 70 percent humidity.
Basic Care Of Orchids:
First off, you definately should have a good book to use for reference and guidance. Orchid expert Nigel Howell has a great ebook - The Orchid Care Expert - that includes a variety of tips and information and you can download it immediately. Don't underestimate the importance of a good reference book or eBook - it will make things quite a bit easier for you.
Like any other plant, your orchid needs the perfect amount of light in order to be healthy. Different species should have differing levels of light. Either way, putting your plant near a sunny window should work fine but you might also consider grow lamp if you are in a northern area for added light in winter.
Giving orchids the ideal amount of humidity will ensure they grow well in any environment. Different species need different amounts of humidity so select your species with care. Orchids need between 40 and 70% humidity so you'll want to pick one that needs the amount of humidity you can provide.
All plants need water, and orchids are no exception. Believe it or not, a lot of people kill their plants by watering excessively! Try watering weekly, depending on the time of year. It's important to give them enough so the soil doesn't dry out, but you don't want standing water as this can lead to disease.
WIth the right reasearch, you might discover that care of orchids is easy in fact, the hardest part might be deciding on which species of orchid to grow!

What Should You Feed Your Orchids?
Fertilizers are usually labeled with things like 30-10-10 or 20-20-20 - but what does that mean? These numbers simply indicate how the ration of nitrogen to phosphorus to potassium in the fertilizer. Of course, you need to know which one to use for your orchids.
Just what is that ideal ratio? If you have potted orchids, use a 20-20-20 mixture. A 30-10-10 mixture is better for orchids that grow on bark. In the spring, they'll need a bit more fertilizing but once the fall come around, you'll want to scale back to a 10-30-20 mix.
