Tales of Beedle the Bard Book Will Benefit Children's Charity
Harry Potter fans, rejoice! Just when we were suffering from withdrawal with no relief in site, J.K. Rowling comes through with a new book, The Tales of Beedle the Bard. Sales of the book will benefit Rowling's charity, Children's High Level Group, which helps institutionalized children.
The Tales of Beedle the Bard
From handcrafted book to market publication
Harry Potter fans will recall that The Tales of Beedle the Bard was the book left to Hermione Granger by Albus Dumbledore in the seventh and final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Only one of the tales, however, is recounted in the Deathly Hallows. In late 2007, author J.K. Rowling created seven handcrafted copies of The Tales of Beedle the Bard. Each book of wizarding fairy tales was handwritten and illustrated, bound in leather, embellished with silver and mounted with semi-precious stones. Rowling gave away six copies to individuals and gave the seventh book to her charity, Children's High Level Group (CHLG), to be auctioned. The book was sold at auction in December 2007 by Sotheby's in London for a record-breaking 1.95 million British pounds.
Amazon.com was the high bidder for the handwritten book. The incredible auction price broke the records for auction of a modern literary manuscript, auction of a children's book, and auction of a work by J.K. Rowling when it sold for £1.95 million (or approximately $4 million US dollars).
Amazon shared the book with the world at that time by posting pictures on its website and reviews of the tales within, but no one was sure Harry Potter fans around the world would ever get a chance to read the five tales within.
Now Harry Potter fans will have a chance to read all the stories that helped Harry find and destroy Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes. The Tales of Beetle the Bard will be released December 4, 2008.
The book will include all five tales, including: 'The Fountain of Fair Fortune', 'The Warlock's Hairy Heart', 'The Tale of the Three Brothers', 'The Wizard and the Hopping Pot' and 'Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump'.

Children's High Level Group
J.K. Rowling's charity will benefit from sales of "Beetle the Bard" book
Children's High Level Group (CHLG) is a nonprofit organization started in 2005 by author J.K. Rowling and Baroness Emma Nicholson MEP to help the 1 million European children living in residential institutions.According to the CHLP website, "only 4% of these children are orphans, and they are in care because their families are poor, disabled or from ethnic minorities. Many of these children have disabilities and handicaps, but often remain without any health or educational interventions. In some cases they do not receive basic services such as adequate food. Almost always they are without human or emotional contact and stimulation."
The site also says studies of adults who grow up in institutions are much more likely than the general population to have difficulty in adult life, including being:
- 500 times more likely to kill themselves
- more than 100 times more likely to have a criminal record
- 45 times more likely to be unemployed or underemployed
- 30 times more likely to become alcoholics
CHLG "is working to give them a better chance in life through political lobbying; education activities; outreach work in institutions and practical support projects on the ground; and a dedicated telephone and email helpline," according to the charity's website.
Sales from The Tales of Beetle the Bard are expected to raise $8 million for the charity, according to a press release from Scholastic, Inc.

Jim Dale won two Grammy awards and was nominated four other times for his reading of the Harry Potter audiobooks. And there's a reason why - he's amazing! If you trip over the strange names for potions while reading the books, need something to listen to while driving a long distance, or simply need a new way to experience these books, you won't be disappointed by the audio version. Jim Dale is undoubtedly the best reader of any audiobook I've ever listened to, and he brings these books to life with marvelous voices for each character.

More About Harry Potter
Harry Potter is a series of seven fantasy novels written by British author J. K. Rowling. The books chronicle the adventures of the eponymous adolescent wizard Harry Potter, together with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, his friends from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The central story arc concerns Harry's struggle against the evil wizard Lord Voldemort, who killed Harry's parents in his quest to conquer the wizarding world and subjugate non-magical (Muggle) people to his rule. Several successful derivative films, video games and other themed merchandise have been based upon the series.
Since the 1997 release of the first novel Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, which was retitled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the United States, the books have gained immense popularity, critical acclaim and commercial success worldwide. As of June 2008, the book series has sold more than 400 million copies and has been translated into 67 languages, and the last four books have consecutively set records as the fastest-selling books in history.
English-language versions of the books are published by Bloomsbury in the United Kingdom, Scholastic Press in the United States, Allen & Unwin in Australia, and Raincoast Books in Canada. Thus far, the first five books have been made into a series of motion pictures by Warner Bros. The sixth, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince'', is scheduled for release on 17 July 2009. The series also originated much tie-in merchandise, making the Harry Potter brand worth £7 billion (US$15 billion).
