Lets Talk About Sign Language...

Sign Language

Sign language is a language
of conveying meaning and getting across message with the help of body language, lip
movements, hand movements, expressions in the face, etc. With practice, people converse
fluently using the sign language.
This was commonly developed in deaf communities which consisted of friends, interpreters,
and families of deaf people, and also people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Like how the
spoken language differs from region to region even this differs though people using
different sign languages can communicate easier than when people using different languages
meet.
There are many different sign languages which have developed over a period of time. The
complex spatial grammar of the languages differs from that of the spoken language and it
can be used to discuss any topic, from the simple and concrete to the lofty as well as
abstract.
There are hundreds of types existing in the deaf communities across the world while most
of them have no recognition status at all! They are as rich as oral language in every
possible way and linguists have proclaimed them to be fit to be classified as true
languages.
The signs are mostly arbitrary and they mostly do not have any visual relationship to the
word referred to. Manual alphabets are used mostly for proper names and technical or
specialized vocabulary. The many unique linguistic features which emerge from the
languages' ability are to produce the meanings in different parts of the visual field
simultaneously.
People are usually mistaken in the sense that they think a sign language depends on the oral
languages entirely and that they are actually oral languages which are spelt out in
action. This language exploits the unique features of the visual medium because the oral
language being linear only one sound can be made or received at a time whereas in this
language a whole scene can be taken in at once as it is visual.
Several channels of information can be expressed simultaneously. . Parents of deaf
children should introduce the language to the ward as early as possible. The earlier the
child is exposed to sign languages and begins to acquire language will result in better
development of the wards communication skills.
Researchers say that the first six months are the most crucial stage to the development of
a childs language skills. Screening for deafness and partial hearing losses have to
be executed on all new borns before they leave the hospital or maximum within the first
month of life.
Becoming fully competent in any language a person exposure to that language must begin as
early as possible and definitely before school age. In an occasion where the existence of
deaf people are high enough a single deaf sign language is taken up by an
entire local community. Countries may have two or more of this language but an area that
contains more than one oral language can have only one it.
American Sign Language

American Sign Language is
a language that uses physical means of communication, such as body language and lip
patterns, instead of oral sound in order to communicate. The person simultaneously uses
their hands to show shapes, orientation and movement of the hands, arms or the body, and
also facial expressions to convey the message or express thoughts.
American sign languages as in other sign languages is used mostly among the deaf, which
can include interpreters and friends and families of deaf people as well as people who are
deaf or hard of hearing. Just as is the case of spoken language, sign language also
differs from one region to another.
Every language has its own sign language developed for and by people who are deaf in
that particular language speaking community. Just as in spoken language where the place
and culture has an impact, sign language also develops in the same manner influenced by
these conditions.
So they learn to keep their identities intact, through time in roughly the same areas
of influence as that of the locally spoken languages. This will occur often even if though
there is no connection between sign language and other regional languages. Similarly with
the America sign language.
Exceptions to this include regions which speak the same language but still have a
variety of sign languages. Variations within a national sign language can usually be
connected to the geographic location of residential schools for the deaf people.
International Sign that was previously known as Gestuno is used mainly at international
Deaf events such as the Deaflympics and meetings of the World Federation of the Deaf.
Recent studies assert that International Sign is a kind of an artificial language, they
conclude that it is more complex than a characteristic pidgin and indeed is more like a
full-signed language.
Sign languages are linguistically quite complex and thorough in comparison with other
spoken languages, despite the common misconception that they are not real languages.
American Sign language
like the other sign languages feature signals and actions which need not necessarily have
a relationship to what they are referring to just as in spoken language where everything
does not go according to a set rule. Nor are they a visual version of an oral language.
They have an extremely well-developed grammar and can efficiently discuss or debate on
various types of abstract as well as precise topics.
Common linguistic features of deaf sign languages are extensive use of classifiers, a
high degree of inflection, and topic-comment syntax. Many only one of its kind linguistic
features emerges from sign languages' ability to produce meaning in different parts of the
visual field simultaneously.
You will be surprised to know that almost anybody can understand sign language as it
involves the use of intricate hand signs, body posture as well as facial expressions.
Sign languages are definitely not related to oral languages. A lot of people are
mistaken that a sign language is invented by people who can hear and are related by
gestures to the oral language. The manual alphabet used in American sign language, mostly
for proper names and technical or any other specialized vocabulary.
The use of finger spelling was taken as a proof oral languages get simplified when they
are incorporated in sign language, However, sign language is just a simple tool existing
with many others. Finger spelling can sometimes be a source lexicalized signs that consist
of new signs. The sign language that has been developed specially for the deaf is not
dependent on any spoken language and has been progressively developing based on its own
norms.
Sign Language Symbols

Sign language can be effectively used to communicate between two people who cannot
understand each other's language. It is the main mode of communication between people who
are deaf or hard of hearing and speech impaired.
Over a period of time, sign language has evolved into a comprehensive language i.e. a
language unto itself with all the rules and grammar found in other languages. Sign
language is also not universal. It is not the same in every country and every region. It
varies from place to place depending on what language the people speak there.
It involves the use of hand gestures and symbols, facial expressions, mouthing, finger
spelling, etc. The American Sign Language is both a visual and manual language. Thoughts
and information are expressed with the use of hand movements, orientation of the palm,
making hand shapes, arm and body movements, expressions of the face, etc.
Sign language symbols are an
integral part of any sign language as this language is more visual in nature. Making signs
with the hands and palm plays a major role in expressing ideas and feelings. Using symbols
also makes it easy for people who do not know the sign language to understand the
communication to a certain extent.
Sign language symbols are
generally symbols depicting words or objects which are popular. This is mainly done with
the help of hand shapes. There are a total of 150 hand shapes in American Sign Language.
These symbols are similar to linguistic sounds. Some of these hand shapes include - using
the fist with the thumb on the side to show letters A or the number 10, using the fist
with the thumb on the front to refer to letter S, using fist with thumb between the middle
and index finger to refer to letter T, flat hands with fingers positioned together for
letter B, flat hands keeping fingers apart to convey the number 4, clawed or spread hands
to convey 5 or E, cupped hand showing C, thumb touching the tips of the finger to show the
letter O, etc.
Using the sign language symbols effectively involves some training in that particular
language. Symbols also include other objects or phrases which are shown by hand shapes.
For example using hand shapes to show a tree, a flower, a chair, etc.
Phrases like how are you, I love you, etc is conveyed using symbols as well as mouthing.
There are variations in the symbols used in different languages. This depends on the
alphabets pertaining to that particular language.
Parts of the body which are used for depicting symbols are the whole face, head, the neck,
the upper arm, the trunk, upper arm, forearm, inside of the wrist, back of the wrist, etc.
In the American Sign Language for example, tapping the upper face with a five hand mean
"father", tapping of the lower face depicts the word "mother" and
tapping of the torso or the chest signifies "fine".
Symbols and signs are thus a very important part of any sign language and one has to be
fluent in the knowledge of these sign
language symbols in order to communicate effectively.
Who Invented The Sign Language

Sign language is a very important mode of communication for people who cannot speak or
hear all over the world. This is an effective language which is a medium for imparting
education to the deaf communities. If you want to know who invented sign language, you
must go back to the year 1620 when the first book of sign language was published by Juan
Pablo de Bonet to help the deaf community communicate. His book originated based on the
Italian physician Girolamo Cardano's finding that ideas could be understood by a deaf
person even though he cannot hear sound or words spoken. The code that he invented for
this purpose came to prominence only after the publication of this book. If you deeply
analyze as to who invented the sign
language, it is very difficult to pin point one particular person or group. The sign language actually evolved as
a natural process due to the necessity to impart education and knowledge to the deaf
communities all over the world. Every language and every region and country developed
their own sign languages. If you still go deeper in the analysis of who invented the sign
language, we find that in the year 1755, the first school for the deaf was founded by Abbe
Charles Michel de L'Epee of Paris. The method he used for imparting education was by using
fingerspelling, hand shapes, gestures and facial expressions. In the year 1788, another
public school was founded in Germany by Samuel Heinicke. Here he taught the deaf speech
reading and speech using more of mouthing. The first school for the deaf in the United
States was founded by Laurent Clerc and Thomas Hopikins Gallaudet in the year 1817. The
liberal arts college in Washington Dc for the deaf which was one of its kind was founded
in the year 1864. Looking further into who invented the sign language, we find that the
American sign language has its
origin in Europe. The signing system formed by Abbe De L'Epee of France forms the basis of
the American Sign Language. This signing system also called the methodical signs was
modified to an extent to be incorporated into the American Sign Language system. Over a
period of time, sign languages started having counterparts in the spoken languages of
various regions and countries and various forms originated. Each linguistic population
therefore came out with their own version of sign languages. Sign languages therefore were
influenced by the cultural and geographical forces of different parts of the world. One
common sign language developed which is similar in certain respects called the
International sign was developed to facilitate the deaf community from all over the world
to participate and communicate effectively in international events like theDeaflympics,
World federation of the Deaf, etc. Thus it is clear that there is no one person you can
pinpoint who invented the sign
language. It evolved throughout the world as a gradual and natural process fuelled by
the necessity of communication for the deaf communities from all over the world.
Sign Language Certification

A sign language which is also known as signed language is a language which uses manual
communication, body language and lip movements instead of sound to express meaning. The
sign language is the one simultaneously combining hand movements, body and facial
expressions to convey the speaker's thoughts.
Sign languages is the well-known way of communication for people who are deaf.
Communities like this include interpreters and friends and families of deaf people as well
as people who are deaf or the people having some hearing difficulties.
Normally, each spoken language contains a sign language counterpart in as
much as each linguistic resident will contain Deaf people who will generate a custom sign
language. In much the same way that geographical or cultural factors will separate
populations and lead to the generation of different and diverse spoken languages, the same
forces work on signed languages. Due to which the identities of such sign languages is
maintained through time even though the local spoken languages might influence them.
This happens even though sign languages have no basic relation to the spoken languages
of the lands in which they arise. There are prominent exceptions to this pattern, however,
there are a few geographically divided regions that share a spoken language as opposed to
signed languages that are not rlated with each other. Variations occurring within a
national sign language can usually be connected to the geographic location of residential
schools for the deaf.
Completing an interpreter course is not enough to become a certified interpreter. You
must be fully knowledgeable with the language apart from the culture of that language and
ethics that are involved for being an interpreter in order to receive the National
Interpreter Certification (NIC).
The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or the RID and the National Association of
the Deaf -the NAD were the two organizations which developed the NIC test.; candidates are
awarded this certificate on successful clearing of this test which assesses their
efficiency and language skills.
Some states have brought statewide sign language certifications
that assess the interpreter's skills and ability. Theere are high testing standards and
widespread practical experience is usually needed before trainees are able to pass this
course.
Some of the few common sign language certifications being awarded are as follows. CSC
is the ability to understand or record both between spoken or written English and American
Sign Language based on a sign code for spoken or written English. CI/CT indicates
capability in interpretation between American Sign Language and spoken English.
SC: L is the Specialty sign
language certification which is issued for Legal Interpreting. IC/TC is the ability to
understand between American Sign Language and spoken or written English. TC is the
capability to transliterate between a sign code for English and spoken or written English.
NAD-Level IV for advanced people is the excellent voice-to-sign skills and above average
sign-to-voice skills, demonstrates understanding skill needed for just about all
situations.
