What is Talk Africa?
Talk Africa is a publication from Ghana that wants to present a different view of Africa.
Although its target is African youth, we believe it offers articles that will challenge readers from all parts of the world.
It aims to rekindle a sense of pride in Africa and its values.
It aims to present a positive view of the continent and to put it centre stage in our consideration of the world.
It recognises the conflict between maintaining tradition and becoming modern and will explore this tension.
Above all it wishes to provide a focal point for new ideas that will create a new generation amongst the youth. A generation that is proud to stand up and be called African.
About Us
Talk Africa is a collaboration between Graham Knight of Discover Ghana Magazine and Ogochukwu Nweke of The 42nd Generation. We are concerned that African youth are unaware of basic facts and essential information about their continent. The African media tends to rely on the foreign media for its stories and these are usually negative. Talk Africa wishes to address this balance.
Identity is not something you are born with but something you are taught. Due to the effects of the past, the one-sided dialogue between Africa and the Industrial world, and the successive failure of African leadership, many Africans have lost confidence in themselves and their continent. We have heard young Africans say they are ashamed to be African. Talk Africa will present another way of understanding the world to show how African values can take their place beside those of the Industrial world.
The youth are marginalised in Ghana. They have no voice and their ideas are not taken seriously because of their age. Yet we have been astonished by the wealth of talent, ideas and understanding of the problems facing the country. Together with The 42nd Generation, we are working with them to harness their energy, give them a forum in which to use their voice and to network them with other youth.
The 42nd Generation aims to rebuild the leadership of Africa. Free, monthly seminars are held in Accra to imbibe the youth with positive African values and a sense of pride in their Continent. The seminars have attracted youth from many West African countries and it is hoped they will take these ideas back to their own countries, set up their own organisations and play their role in influencing the minds of the youth.
How to get your copy of Talk Africa
We are also looking for other countries to distribute in. We send a pdf which you print out and sell. You can keep whatever you earn.
How You Can Help
At present, nobody gets paid and the team are freely donating their time and money. Ideally, we would like to employ a small team of youth and pay people for their articles and contributions. As the circulation increases we hope to be able to attract advertising to cover our costs, but right now any support is welcomed.
If you believe in our ideas and aims please help us to continue our work by making monthly donations. Any small amount people outside Africa are able to donate goes a long way here.
