Talking Alarm Clocks - A Necessity!

When my husband lost his vision in 1988, we quickly learned that a talking watch and/or talking alarm clocks would be a requirement, not a luxury! In those days, the internet was still a mystery to me. I got on the telephone and started making calls until I found a wonderful little talking watch!

Yes, the talking watch now announces the time. Not only that, my husband can push a button and know exactly what time it is. What a huge aid to his independence!

As the years have gone by, we have gradually discovered talking alarm clocks and other helpful items. If you have a friend or relative who is visually impaired, please let them know about these aids.

We did not realize talking alarm clocks were so readily available until one Christmas, when a friend bought one for my husband. What a super gift! I am daily thankful for the inventors and sellers of these small items that make such a huge difference in our lives!

I read about an alarm clock that goes off, rolls off your table, and bounces around until you actually get out of bed, grab it, and turn it off. I think a talking one would be less annoying...;)

Thank you! I actually have Clocky featured on my Unusual Alarm Clocks lens. However, I cannot imagine my legally blind husband trying to find Clocky! That would be chaos! But I do think the Clocky clock looks like great fun in a college dorm! Thank you for commenting.

I don't know if you already know about this product or not, as it was featured on good morning america or the today show (i forget which one), but I recently found it and think it is an awesome idea---it's an alarm clock that moves around and makes noise. (some people might think of it as a nuisance, but i think it could really be beneficial to someone who is visually impaired that has a hard time waking up in the morning). It is called Clocky, and although i could not find a price for it, i know that it was invented by a student at m.i.t. i hope this is a useful tip for someone who is more of an afternoon/evening person who may be visually impaired. (i would recommend having someone around to help find it because it moves by itself, and even though it makes lots of noise, i don't know how long of a battery life it has)...good luck to everyone, and especially to you & your family Joan!!!

Joan, it is totally beyond my comprehension that I never rated this lens. Something funny here, as I remember it. Unless of course you have another similar lens. You and your family are such an inspiration to me. It's the sense of humour which is so important. Thanks for all your help although my sight is great, thankfully.

I have poor eyesight without very strong eyeglasses and can understand how it might be to be legally blind. These clocks and timers are a wonderful idea for low vision folks and maybe even for a child learning to tell time. Thank you for this informative lens from a personal use perspective.

    Joan,
Thank you so much for creating this lens. Since I have MS, I get double vision and/or blurry vision from time-to-time. These items you have listed will certainly make my life easier. I knew about the talking watch, but I had no idea the other items existed. I love the modern style of the Moshi alarm clock with all of its features, and I never would have thought of a talking calendar! How cool is that? The talking timer will be useful in several areas of my house because I cannot see to set the timer that we have now. This lens will be very helpful to many people. It sure gets 5 stars from me. Love, Deb
