Advice about prom dresses and homecoming dresses to make your special day as beautiful and unforgettable as possible! :)

Tips for Picking the Perfect Prom Dress

Your complexion determines a lot about which color dress is best for you!

"...you know prom is mostly about the dress, right? It's pretty much all downhill from there."

~Helen Hunt, What Women Want

Helen Hunt had it right when commenting on the glories of the biggest event of the year for the average Junior girl: prom. Decent looking prom dresses are easy to find, but one that best suits your features and style is slightly more difficult to locate. You have to consider the following when searching for a prom dress:

- Your body figure

- The color of your hair

- Your complexion

- The color of your date's attire

- Your price range

- The popularity of the dress

Prom dress shopping can be hard on your self-confidence because it forces you to repeat your dress size over, and over, and over again at each store, which makes you focus on it, which makes you think (no matter what size you are) that you're fat. Don't be discouraged. Everyone has a different body and yours is just as attractive as the next girl's.

Instead of feeling down on yourself, you can explore the possibilities that come along with having a unique body style. For instance, find a dress that best accentuates your favorite features about yourself. To draw attention to the shoulders, a halter top gown is the best because the narrowing straps draw the eyes to the neck and shoulder area. To draw attention to your breasts (especially for girls with large body types), consider a strapless dress. This will create a line that immediately draws the eyes to your bosom and, if you're feeling bold, to your cleavage.

Don't feel the need to go along with the typical, floor length, sequins ridden, spaghetti strap dress that girls have been wearing for decades. Feel free to fully express yourself in your dress choice and make yourself noticeable on the dance floor.

Some girls just pick the dress they want without considering how their skin or hair looks with the dress. This is crucial because you don't want to be a walking fashion disaster when you enter the gates of prom. Redheads - consider dark earth tones. Browns, deep reds, and most definitely greens would look best with your undoubtedly pale complexion and freckly skin. Avoid yellows, light oranges, light reds, and dark blues. Blondes - consider solid tones like black, blue, pink, red, or patterns. Make sure the patterned dress you pick is not too 'busy'. Avoid pale yellow, and brown. Brunettes - consider green, purple, yellow, and red. Avoid black and brown.

Last few tips: Typically, (if you are going to the prom as a guy/girl couple) the girl makes the guy pick a tie or vest that would match the dress color. This is a fantastic idea because a tie costs much less than the dress into which you put time and effort. Never pick the shoes before the dress. I've done this before and it hindered my dress shopping fun because I had to stay within a specific genre of dress that would match the shoes. Don't let your price range hinder you too much. You want to look your best on such an important night. Lastly, make sure that the dress you pick is not the hottest pick of the season. You don't want to show up in the same dress as someone else!

Good luck and have fun!
