Be Careful With What You Bleep - Tame That Tongue!

When can something that we can control all the time be actually wild, you say? All the time.

Words do have power, especially when you're talking to someone. You can conjure up negative thoughts, but you can actually make it bless someone if you just tame that tongue.

I recently attended this powerful seminar sponsored by a friend. It was all about this topic. Very inspiring. Reminded me of an awfully memorable story, too.

How to tame the tongue? Let's talk.

Facts About the Tongue

* Close to fifty percent of the bacteria in the mouth lives on the surface of our tongue.
* There are approximately 9,000 taste buds on the tongue.
* Your tongue has 3,000 taste buds.
* 85% of the population can curl their tongue into a tube.
* We have four basic tastes. The salt and sweet taste buds are at the tip of the tongue, bitter at the base, and sour along the sides.
* Not all our taste buds are on our tongue; about 10% are on the palette and the cheeks.
* Every person has a unique tongue print.

A Hair Raising Story

Based on a True-to-Life Story

There was a little boy, ten or twelve who was told by his mother to look for his daddy who was out in the neighborhood with his friends. Naturally the little boy asked neighbors if they saw his dad.

One crazy neighbor meanly joked, "I saw him on a large box. He was in a suit, lying down, peacefully." Of course the kid was furious.

In fact he was furious enough to curse him, "you will die soon."

After a week, some thief stabbed that man to death.

What Do You Think

Do you think the little boy contributed to that guy's death?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes.

Rajays says:

Maybe - i guess it's called having a "Black Tongue" . Many believe that there are no coincidences in this world.

resabi says:

Well, if the boy's father or other relative was the thief... No debate without the other side, so I'm going to vote on the "It's possible" side"!

Nope. Just a coincidence.
(I don't know also goes here)

Norma_Budden says:

No. I can only hope his life has not been scarred by the experience.

dustytoes says:

No, and I hope he doesn't believe he did!

SereneSea says:

I think it was a coincidence unless he has some powers.
To think about it, one should not think evil and speak evil.

jp1978 says:

I think it was a coincidence. Still very creepy.

aj2008 says:

No, but the little boy may grow up thinking that he did. Which is why I try to make my own children see that being careless with words in the short term can lead to long term anguish. Once said, you can never unsay it.

What I Didn't Tell You

That Kid Was Me

That little boy was no other than me.

I can still remember how mad I was that day, and I still vividly recall how I said to myself, "Heh, serves him right." But now, I do think that it is a very awful thing to say on my part. Of course I can excuse myself for I was a stupid kid by that time but it still reminds me every time to be more careful with my words.

The Bible on the Power of the Tongue

James 3:1-12

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle. If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits.

How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell. For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, but no one can tame the tongue-a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water? Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh.

Now Let's Start Taming Our Tongues!

Practice It With me!

No, I am not perfect with my words. I still have the tendency to choose the wrong words when I am mad or talk negatively sometimes. But I am perpetually trying. Here some of the tips I found very useful:

1. Replace swear words with something pleasant. Did you know that I just replaced "F*CK" with "Oh my God"? It took some time and effort. But now when I swear, I pray! :D

2. When you find yourself in a heated argument with someone, get out of that place. Pronto. And the argument will stop. Nobody fights with himself.

3. Try to reword your point. When you use harsh words, it doesn't do anything good. You won't sound mature, you don't exude authority and respect and you will sound like you grew up in a pirate ship. Choose kind words. "I think that won't matter" sounds better "I don't give a damn", right?

4. If you're going to say something negative, make sure it will add value. Otherwise, keep it to yourself. This is probably my pet peeve. I have the knack for hushing my friends when they say something negative. Probably because I follow the law of attraction. I also shift the topic when I find myself talking negatively.

5. Learn to say, "Thank You" and "Sorry". This tip is self explanatory.

My mother always used to say (and still does) "Ignore the ignorant" and when the ignorant start spouting off, I do really try to ignore them, or I take a long time to respond, so any response is calm and well thought out. -AJ2008
