Duckworth Will Serve In Department of Veteran's Affairs


February 3, 2009 - The White House announced today that one of America's most respected veteran's Illinois' Tammy Duckworth, will become assistant secretary of public and intergovernmental affairs for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Some of the things that Duckworth will oversee include programs for homeless Veterans, consumer affairs and special rehabilitative events. Stay tuned for more information on Tammy Duckworth's climb!

Three reasons to love Tammy Duckworth 

1. Tammy received the Purple Heart for injuries she sustained in Iraq. She fought her way back from double amputation of her legs, plus other severe injuries, to be one of Illinois' most beloved veterans and public officials.

2. After she was injured, Tammy helped establish the Intrepid Foundation to honor fallen veterans as well as help those who have been injured.

3. After returning home and loosing a Congressional race, Tammy was appointed Director of the Illinois Department of Veteran's Affairs, where she established programs to assist returning veterans with their education, housing and health needs.

Tammy Duckworth at a Glance 

Ladda Tammy Duckworth (born 1968) is the Assistant Secretary of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. She was previously the director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs.

Duckworth is an Iraq War veteran and former U.S. Army helicopter pilot whose severe combat wounds cost her both of her legs and damaged her right arm. She continues to serve as a Major in the Illinois Army National Guard along with her husband, Major Bryan W. Bowlsbey, a signal officer and fellow Iraq War veteran.
