Thanjavur - Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu
Thanjavur District is the Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu. The Big Temple and the other renowned temples in the district are known all over the world. Thanjavur was the cultural headquarters of the country in 1790. Thanjavur gained distinction during the period of Chola Kings, who made it as their headquarters. Thereafter, it was ruled by Nayaks and Maratta Kings, who developed art and culture here. The cultural, the architectural and the scholarly activity of these monarchs are replicated in the great monuments like Grand Anaicut, Big Temple and Serfoji Mahal Library etc. in the district.

The Oldest City - Thanjavur

Thanjavur is one of the oldest city of South India and has significance in Dravidan history. Whole Thanjavur district is known as the Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu.
Thanjavur has a rich historical background and it is a prism of ancient as well as the modern South Indian civilisation. Thanjavur was once the stronghold of Great CHOLAS and then MARATHAS. Since then Thanjavur has been one of the Chief Political, cultural and religious centres of South India.
Just 50km away from TRICHY international airport, Thanjavur itself contains 90 beautiful temples, as it was favoured by the CHOLAS between 1st to 12th centuries, the Nayaks in the 16th century and the MARATHAS in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The world renowned THANJAVUR ART GALLERY has been witnessing a steady growth of tourists- foreign and domestic- to view its priceless wonders.
The Art gallery, a fabulous collections of Bronze icons, Stone Sculptures and Art pieces was opened on 9th December, 1951.
A total of 25,807 foreign tourists and 162,292 domestic tourists had visited the gallery in the year 2007.

Thanjavur is a significant centre of South Indian art, culture and architecture. Most of the Great Existing Chola Temples, and UNESCO World Heritage Monument are to be found in an around Thanjavur. The leading among the Great Living Chola temples, the Brihadeeswara Temple or Big Temple, is placed in the middle of the town. The important landmark in Thanjavur is the great Brahadeeswara Temple also known as the Big Temple, it was built by Raja Raja Chola - I. It is one of the most magnificent piece of South Indian temple architecture. Established in 1011 AD in celebration of victory of Chola kingdom that extended till Ceylon and some parts of the Malaya archipelago. Now it is a world heritage site.
Even today Thanjavur is not only considered as the rice bowl of tamil nadu but also as a cultural head quarters. Though the Thanjavur district is dominated by agriculture, the town is diverse in its own, Having a literacy percentage of more that 75% and a homogenous mix of population of all religions.

BIG TEMPLE
Big Temple in the Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu has frequently been called `the temple of temples'. Built exactly before 1000 years, during the golden days of Chola rule, it is possibly one of the most excellent expressions of artistic excellence that could be conceived of. Built by the best of Chola emperor Rajaraja, this temple was named after him as Rajarajesvaram, it means `the temple of the Isvara (God) of Rajaraja'. Later on, it became known as the Brihadisvara temple significance the temple of the `Great Isvara'
ART GALLERIES & MUSEUM
One of the most outstanding attractions in Thanjavur is Art Gallery and Museum. Tamil University Museum has a collection of coins and musical instruments, stone and bronze sculptures paitings etc. Another appeal here is the Schwartz Church, situated in the palace garden which was built in 1779 A.D by Rajah Serfoji. At Thanjavur, there are many eminent museums having interesting collections of stone sculpture, coins and musical instruments. In the middle of these museums, the Nayak Durbar Hall Art Museum and the Rajaraja Chola Museum are the most notable. They hold magnificent collection of Chola Bronzes-all discovered locally.
THANJAVUR PAINTINGS
The Tanjore Paintings of Thanjavur are celebrated for their special style of decorating the paintings. They are done together on glass and board. In both types, the figures and the background are luxuriously ornamented with gold leaf and gems. The theme of this painting is mostly related to Lord Krishna in which he is shown in a variety of poses. But there are also a range of paintings in temples, of all the other Gods and Saints.

Thanjavur ( (taƱc?v?r), also known by its anglicised name Tanjore, is a municipality and the headquarters of the Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It has a population of a 221,185 (2001 census).
The name Thanjavur is derived from "Tanjan", a legendary asura in Hindu mythology. Thanjavur is one of the oldest cities in India and has a long and varied history dating back to Sangam period. The city rose into prominence during the rule of the Later Cholas when it served as the capital of the Chola empire. After the fall of the Cholas, the city was ruled by the Pandyas, Vijayanagar Empire, the Madurai Nayaks, the Thanjavur Nayaks, the Thanjavur Marathas and the British. It has been a part of independent India since 1947.
Thanjavur is an important center of South Indian art and architecture. Most of the Great Living Chola Temples, an UNESCO World Heritage Monument are located in an around Thanjavur. Thanjavur is well-connected by roads and railways with other parts of India and with cities and towns in Tamil Nadu. The nearest airport is Tiruchirapalli located at a distance of 56 kilometres and the nearest seaport in Nagapattinam which is 84 kilometres from Thanjavur.
How to get there
By Air:
Nearest International Airport is Tirichirapally (50 km). There are direct flights from Singapore, Kolalumbur, Dubai, Kuwait as well as domestic Airports.
By rail:
Thanjavur is also accessible by train from other major Indian cities. There are daily trains from/to Chennai, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Trichy and to all main cities. For train timings and on-line reservations (within India) visit the IRCTC's website.
By bus:
There are a number of state and private buses that ply daily from Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai andTrichy. The journey from Chennai takes about 9 hours and nearly 1 hour from Trichy. There are over-night buses.
