Science Fiction Grandmaster

I started reading Robert Heinlein as a freshman in high school.  His stories were the first science fiction that I read. The books were juvenile science fiction, but they got me hooked.  I read Space Cadet.  I watched the series on TV when I was seven or eight.

I did not see the libertarian themes when I first read his stories.  When I discovered libertarian ideas, I found he had been there all along, particularly with The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.

One of my favorite stories about Heinlein is his relationship with Philip K. Dick.  Dick and Heinlein were worlds apart on their political views.  When Dick was down and out, Heinlein gave him a typewriter.  Dick was one of Heinlein's great admirers.  I like them both.

Three reasons to love Robert Heinlein

Robert Anson Heinlein's stories let you picture possible futures. His stories have lots of detail about inventions, like moving walkways. One of his characters, Waldo Farthingwaite-Jones, invented a mcehanical hand that could be controlled remotely.

His stories combine ideas and action. They are usually great fun to read, and still help you think about ideas on liberty, politics, living with other people, love and sex. He was recognized as a Science Fiction Grandmaster.

I discovered in putting this lens together, that he had the idea of Pay It Forward. Help someone and ask them to pass along help to others. Look at the Heinlein Society.

Heinlein quotes

The Quotable Heinlein is found here.

He had many, here is a sample:

"Be wary of strong drink. It can make you shoot at tax collectors... and miss."

Interesting lens. I keep meaning to read Stranger in a Strange Land because of its affect on modern Paganism. Thanks for sharing your love for Heinlein.

I prefer his earlier books; by the later ones he allowed detailed and complex relationships to overwhelm the story. I re-read Glory Road about once a year. I too have found his political views quite refreshing.
