note - legislative offices have been transferred to Dodoma, which is planned as the new national capital; the National Assembly now meets there on regular basis. Dodoma: Dodoma was designated in 1973 to be the capital, but most government functions are still in Dar es Salaam. Despite that, Dodoma can make for a good chance to see a less tourist traveled side of Tanzania with fewer of the glitzy attractions. See a typical African market, with stall after stall of weavings, fabrics and handicrafts, or hike up Lion Rock to the northwest to look back over the whole city, then afterwards, you could experience the nightlife at places like the Climax Club, with a bar, pool and squash courts
