High Street travel Agents the days are numbered

Online travel booking is on the rise ! And it's cheaper ( I have to say that don't I )

With the massive increase in online shopping one has to wonder if the traditional highstreet travel agents will eventually decline in numbers or fade away completely over time.

Nowadays you can plan your own holiday itinerary from the comfort of your own home. Everything the traditional high street travel agent could do for you, from searching for flights, car hire, hotel bookings and holiday packages can be done from one web site by anyone who is reasonably competant on the Internet today.

With up to date modern technology todays travel websites come equipped with comprehensive destination guides and fast search booking engines linked to many travel retailers world-wide so searching out and costing a trip is an easy thing to do and Internet rates are invariably cheaper than high street retailers as there are no overheads to pay.

A considerable number of people are still concerned about security online as
there is so much fraud going on out there.

The cardinal rules for online safety are have a good firewall, anti virus and anti spyware program and most importantly check that they are kept up to date as there are always new threats emerging.

If you are buying online then check that the site you are buying from has a security certificate and that it is up to date and you should also have a little padlock displayed next to your browser window to show that you are on a secure site.

If you follow these rules then you should be okay.

Lanzarote top five attractions.

Lanzarote has a good climate throughout the year and winter temperatures rarely fall bellow 70 degrees farenheit. There can be some wind as it is a fairly exposed Island being stuck out in the Atlantic Ocean some 70 miles off of the coast of Africa.

Lanzarote has avoided the over crowded development and beer swilling culture of many of the larger Canary Islands and has it's own distinctive character, with dramatic volcanic landscapes in the South of the Island and a greener more verdant side in the North.

Most of the resorts are low key small complexes, which come well equipped for the holidaymaker and the coastline offers some lovely beaches with varying degrees of black and yellow sand.

Cesar Manrique (1919-1992) was born on Lanzarote and his artistic influence can be found all over the Island. He was given a free hand by the council to create whatever he wanted and created artistic marvels out of the Islands geographical oddities.

You will not find any roadside billboards on the Island because of his influence and most of the buildings are no higher than two storeys, apart from some of the tourist areas. A lot of the roundabouts on the Island have fantastic wind driven mobile scultures and his influence can be found almost everywhere.

My wife and I hired a car at Arrecife airport for two weeks at a very reasonable rate and drove down to the resort of Playa Blanca on the southernmost tip of the Island.

Playa Blanca is a reasonably quiet resort and offers excellent beaches, great shopping, quality restaurants and low key nightlife. The resort is good for couples and children alike.

It was a great base for exploring the Island and about 3 miles away at Papayago are 5 of the best beaches on the Island. These are accessed by a dirt track and a fee of 3 Euros is payable on entry. Be warned the last two beaches are for naturists so if you want to let it all hang out then these are the beaches for you.

If you smoke or drink then the Island offers probably some of the cheapest prices in the world for tobacco and alcohol and food is reasonably priced too. There are many Canarian dishes you can try, or standard European food is freely available.

All in all it was a super holiday and a superb location for a winter break, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and plan to go again next winter.

Below is a list of the top five attractions on the Island and a link to more detailed Lanzarote information.

Timanfaya National Park
Take a trip to Lanzarotes stunning volcanic landscape dominated by the fire mountain. If you do nothing else on the Island you must visit here.

Cactus Garden
Another of Cesar Manriques artistic creations, built in a disused quarry and boasting over 1200 species of cactii from around the world.

Fundacion Cesar Manrique
Cesar Manriques half submerged home, built in a string of volcanic lava bubbles. this place really astounds the visitor with it's artistic flairand superb design.

Jameos Del Agua
Cesar Manrique created a wonderfuly exotic subterranean water garden built in a volcanic tunnel with a partly collapsed roof. Tiny blind albino crabs live in its eerie underwater lake. As you walk round haunting music gives the place a surreal atmosphere.

Mirador Del Rio
Another of Manriques marvellous creations, this is a restaurant and a viewpoint giving superb views across to the neibouring island of La Graciosa

DETAILED LANZAROTE INFORMATION

Special Internet rates for Hotel booking.

Have you ever wondered how the online travel
booking websites can offer such discounted rates for hotels.

Because of the huge volume of hotel bookings that the travel operator processes, they are able to use this buying power to negotiate special rates with the individual property owners.

It is a similar scenario to the supermarket chains who because of their buying power can sell baked beans much cheaper than the poor corner shop down the road as they get a better price because of the volume they purchase.

Most online travel agents will guarantee that the Special Internet Rates are the lowest that you will be able to find.

You may say to yourself "What's the catch?" as these cheap rates are bound to raise some scepticism.

The answer is that the only requirement is that you pay up front using your credit card. So booking a room at these discounted rates gives you both savings and security. Can you beat that!

You may decide that you don't want to book online, this is not a problem as on reputable online travel booking websites a freephone number is available to phone through your booking direct and all you have to do is quote a reference number.

Greece, my favourite destination

Total Relaxation.

My wife and I have been regular travelers to Greece for many years and absolutely love the place. There is something magical about this country that has us returning year on year.

The mountainous scenery is breathtaking and the sea is always crystal clear and so inviting.

The people always seem so welcoming and friendly and if you speak a few words beware as you will be plied with Ouzo or even better Raki and eventuallly stagger back to your accomodation.

For any of you fellow lovers of Greece out there I have placed a a link to my message board on here.

You can add your own messages or just browse the onsite information about Greece and the Greek Islands. If you visit I will buy you an Ouzo or three!

Search and book Cruises from your armchair.

A life on the ocean wave.

Today's modern Cruise liners come equipped with a fantastic selection of amenities, and offer superb shopping and entertainment options as well as a huge choice of onboard leisure facilities.

Most people assume that Cruises are only for the very rich, or are a once in a lifetime experience, but they are actually extremely good value for money taking into account the food, onboard activities and entertainment all included in the price.

A wide choice of Cabins are available on most Liners, from luxury staterooms with outside balconies, to interior cabins for those on a lower budget, the choice is huge.

Today's modern Liners come equipped with stabilisers that keep movement to a minimum and there are lots of over the counter remedies available if seasickness is a worry. As a last resort there is even an injection available from the ships Doctor which will cure any ill affects.

The Caribbean tends to be the most popular Cruise Destination especially in the winter months, followed by the Mediterranean in the summer. Altogether there are a huge number of world-wide destinations and options available if you are planning a Cruise.

You can choose to fly out to your destination and join your ship in the Caribbean or Mediterranean or you can set sail from the initial Embarkation port and spend a few relaxing days at sea. Another option is to spend a week for example in New York followed by a Caribbean Cruise for the second week, there are limitless combinations available.

If you are looking to keep costs to a minimum then avoid booking in the peak season or book when the liner is re-locating from its summer to its winter base.

Booking your Cruise can be done through a traditional high street travel agent or in today's technological age from a website online.

Online Cruise booking websites offer virtual tours, comprehensive itineraries, deck plans and much more to help plan the ultimate cruise, and you will find all of the major Cruise companies in one place to aid your research.

If you are over 65 the insurance premiums can be quite hefty. In this case the best option is to look for a specialist advisor that caters specifically for the over 65's and will put you in touch with companies that offer higher age limits and lower premiums.

With such a colossal choice of options available, and the constant improvements being made by the Cruise industry, they are likely to continue to be popular for a long time to come.
