Are you looking for an easy Tarot card explanation?

There are 78 cards in the tarot deck that are comprised of 22 cards called the Major Arcana and 56 cards called the Minor Arcana.

I acquired my first deck of tarot cards when I was only 9 years old, well over 30 years ago, as a Christmas gift from my Grandma Quinn. Of course she had thought they were just a colorful children's card game, and had no idea what they really were.

I've loved the tarot ever since. I love collecting different decks, I even have a "Lord of the Rings" deck. I've been reading the tarot cards for myself, family, friends and professionally for over 30 years. I have probably read over 100 books on the subject, taught tarot reading classes and workshops and even designed my own deck.

Why do I keep studying about a subject, that with over 30 years of study, you would think there was nothing more to learn? Well, because there simply is no such thing as an easy tarot card explanation.

Why there is no easy tarot card explanation

mystics through the ages have believed the symbols on tarot cards contain hidden wisdom

Many of the symbols found on tarot cards are similar to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics found in temples and tombs that belonged to Pharohs.

There is even one legend that the tarot deck was created in the fabled city of Atlantis. That before the city fell, the city elders and wise ones gathered, and fearing that all of their knowledge, wisdom, books and writings would soon be lost, they came up with a way to preserve it by hiding their secrets in a deck of playing cards.

Even a regular, seemingly innocuous deck of 52 standard playing cards is full of hidden meaning. There are 52 cards in the deck and 52 weeks in a year. There are 4 suits that reflect the four seasons in the year.

Clubs = Spring
Diamonds = Summer
Hearts = Autumn
Spades = Winter

The 13 cards in each suit reflect the 13 weeks in each season as well as the 13 lunar months in each year. The moon also moves 13 degrees during the course of each day.

That is just the tip of a gigantic iceberg into the hidden meanings inside standard playing cards, imagine how much more is hidden in the 78 card highly illustrated tarot deck.

Fun Tarot Decks!

Collecting tarot decks is addicting.

I admit it, I have a CTDC disorder! Compulsive Tarot Deck Collecting is one of my favorite little vices. It's just that there are so many beautiful and really cool decks to choose from. I guess it's really a kind of art collection, and each deck contains 78 works of art, how cool is that?

Using the Tarot as a Personal Growth Tool

How to make the tarot work for you.

Everyone knows the tarot is used by psychics and seers to divination, but most people leave out what an excellent tool the tarot is for self exploration.

Once you've learned the basic meanings of the cards, there are lots of different ways you can incorporate them in your own personal journey through life. I sometimes just randomly choose a card to reflect on, especially if I'm having a bad day. Then as the day progresses, I think about what that particular card is telling me about what is going on in my life.

More times than not, the card I choose really relates to what is going on with me, and help me to reflect on my issues and that helps me come up with solutions to the problem.

A simple Tarot card Explanation

Would take all the mystery and fun out of the tarot

Half the fun of tarot cards is the mystery. How do they work? Why do they work? What do they mean?

I often find that even the biggest unbelievers, still get in line to get a reading, when I take out the tarot deck at gatherings and parties. We simply can't resist, the lure of these colorful mysterious cards.

One of the greatest things about the tarot is that you could spend your whole life studying it and still never learn everything there is to know!

Books about the Tarot

How to Choose?

When you finally give in to that desire to learn more about tarot cards, the zillions of choices out there can make your head spin and make you more confused than ever. I used the old Rider-Waite deck I got from my grandmother for years, not even knowing that there were other choices out there.

Once I found out, I bought everything I found. That only made me start second guessing myself and more confused as each day passed. There are literally hundreds of tarot books and dozens upon dozens of tarot decks to choose from. Finding the one that is just right for you can be a real challenge.

These books focus on Tarot history and/or how to use the tarot for personal growth. I like these books, because they can be used with any deck and you can incorporate your personal take on the cards when you use them.

Would you personally ever get a Tarot Reading?

Everyone has their own opinion about tarot cards and tarot readings. Some people really believe it literally. Some people think it's very entertaining, but don't take it too seriously. Some use the tarot as a tool to help them see different options available to them about this or that problem. Some use the tarot for personal growth and meditation. Some people use the tarot for a combination of reasons.

Then there of course is the other side of the coin. Some people think the tarot is totally fake and stupid. Some think it's just a big old scam. Then there are also those who think it's pure evil, the devil's hand-book or an abomination to God.

What Do you think?

Learning to Read the Tarot Cards

My personal recommendation!

Here is the best advice I can give to anyone really interested in learning the tarot cards.

Choose one system of learning and stick with only that one until you have it down. I say this because, just like there are a zillion different decks and books to choose from, there is also a zillion different methods of learning to go with each of those books.

Here's the "catch", I'm explaining the catch so you don't have to learn from my mistakes. How any one person interprets the tarot cards is ALWAYS their own personal experience.

This means that, each of those books are, that particular writer's personal interpretation of the tarot. Which means that if you buy 5 different books, you will get 5 different interpretations of what each card means. This is the aspect that makes learning the tarot such a confusing experience.

So knowing the "catch", my advice is to choose one tarot learning system and only use that one system until you personally feel comfortable with the cards. Every book out there has the same general meanings for each card, but only you can find what each card really means to you.

The Tarot is just a tool each person uses to make contact with their own intuitive abilities. There is no right or wrong, there is no one meaning for each card, if you go into learning the tarot that way, you will never learn it.
