Tatton Park - The Garden

The garden provides a backdrop of Victorian grandeur to the large mansion. The gardens have a Fernery, Orangery, Rose Garden, Tower Garden, Pinetum, and Italian and Japanese gardens. The restored Walled Garden includes a Kitchen Garden and magnificent glasshouses, where traditional methods of gardening are used.

The South front of the mansion has grassy terraces and flower filled urns. Steps lead down to a fountain surrounded by an Italian parterre. When I was a child, a favourite occupation of children visiting the garden was to roll down the slopes at either side of the south terrace!

There is a classic conservatory which is filled with plants from the nineteenth century

Seasonal Highlights include:
Spring

* Japanese Garden
* Rhododendrons and Azaleas April to June
* Italian Garden with Polyanthus
* Daffodils and tulips
* Seasonal display in the show house
* Handkerchief trees in May

Tatton Park - Gardens
The 50 acres of gardens at Tatton have been developing for over 200 years with each successive owner of the estate playing their part in its evolution. Today it is an almost complete picture of how the gardens existed in Edwardian times.

Every owner - and the fashion of the times - has played a part in the evolution of the gardens
Tatton Park - Japanese Garden
The Japanese Garden was almost certainly the result of Alan de Tatton's visit to the Anglo-Japanese Exhibition at the White City in London in 1910.

The garden was restored in 2000/2001 for the Japan Festival and was the result of over 14 years of research with input from various Japanese specialists.
Tatton Park - Glasshouses
The glasshouses today give a reasonable representation of what would have been here originally.

Glasshouses were built at Tatton from around the mid 1700's with the trend for growing pineapples along with many other fruit including figs, apricots, grapes, peaches and nectarines.

The conservatory was designed by Joseph Paxton - famous for designing Crystal Palace
Tatton Park - Pleasure Grounds
The pleasure grounds include a maze and a topiary, heavy planting of rhododendrons and azaleas, a tower garden, a rose garden and an Italian parterre garden on the terrace below the south front of the house.
Tatton Park - Walled Garden
The walled garden was used to grow fruit and vegetables. The outhouses have recently undergone extensive restoration.

These delightful Gardens at Tatton Park cover 50 acres. Much of the gardens were designed by Lewis Wyatt in the 1800s and are a collection of gardens within a garden. The terraced Italian garden which graces the south face of the mansion give beautiful views across the park. Among the smaller gems of the gardens are the Leech pool, ablaze with colour from banks of azalea each May, the Rose garden which was laid out for Lady Anna Egerton in 1913, and the contrasting Tower garden with its topiary backdrop. There is so much more to see at Tatton including probably one of the best Japanese gardens in Europe.
