Tattoo Concealer - How to Choose the Best One

Can I use regular makeup as a tattoo concealer? From the outside, a tattoo concealer doesn't seem much different than a regular foundation or cover up, but look a bit closer and you will see it takes a very special makeup to cover a tattoo.

Tattoo Concealer vs. Regular Makeup

Why are tattoos harder to cover then other skin problems?

Tattoo Concealer - How Tattoos WorkSkin issues, more commonly referred to as 'skin imperfections' include any type of blemish, bump, scar, red or brown spot, birth mark or acne on the body. These are very common natural skin issues and typically come and go through out your life. In most cases these are small spots on the epidermal layer of the skin that are very similar to your own skin color and easily treated, covered or remain unnoticeable.

Tattoos on the other hand are much different than natural skin imperfections. When you get a tattoo, colored pigments, or ink, are injected deep in to the dermal layer of the skin these pigments are much different in color, stability and content than anything your body would naturally produce; tattoos are also typically much larger and darker than regular skin imperfections. All of these reasons combined are great examples of why a tattoo makeup used to cover every day blemishes just won't cut it as a tattoo concealer.

Will Leg and Body Cover Makeup Work?

How can I tell if this tattoo concealer will actually cover my tattoos?

Tattoo Concealer - MakeupThere is a fine line when it comes to choosing the right tattoo concealer. There are a lot of scar, 'leg and body' and other cosmetics available that claim they can also cover your tattoos, but this isn't the case. First off, a good tattoo concealer is made especially for tattoos. Just because a cosmetic can cover light brown sunspots doesn't mean it will work for your bright orange knuckle tattoo. (I know from experience!)

Corrective cosmetics are based on color theory, you need a tattoo cover up concealer that can completely conceal ever color under the sun, including black which is the hardest color to conceal. If using something other than a tattoo concealer the ink simply can not be concealed and will bleed through. By using special minerals a good tattoo concealer will also not only conceal the ink below but reflect light off of the tattooed area making impossible to detect.

It Takes Multiple Layers to Completely Conceal a Tattoo

(after all, Rome wasn't built in a day!)

Tattoo Concealer - Chest Tattoo Cover upThe next biggest difference between tattoo concealers and cosmetics are the texture and stability. Generally speaking, the tattoo's you are covering are large and noticeable. You need a tattoo concealer with a great, natural looking texture and a lot of flexibility. Concealers like the one shown above are dry and will crack after being worn for an extended period of time, and they also tend to look fake when used in large amounts. This type of makeup is also harder to layer which is a crucial part in concealing tattoos. The chest tattoo pictured here was done with Ferbs Cosmetics. This application took a total of 4 thin layers to completely conceal. After allowing each layer to dry and finishing with an application of Alibi Setting Powder the tattoos are completely unnoticeable and wore for 24 hours without any touchups! Also notice how the colors of the tattoo cover up makeup change with each layer. This is completely normal.

Long lasting wear that won't rub off on clothes and is waterproof!

How long, and how well, will your tattoo concealer last?

Tattoo Concealer Won't Rub Off on ClothesThe last thing you need to look for when selecting a tattoo concealer is that it is long lasting, won't rub off on clothes and is waterproof. More than likely you will want to cover up tattoos for a wedding, special event or job interview. Whatever the reason for wanting to conceal your tattoo, you need to be sure you have a reliable tattoo cover that is not going to rub off; creating a mess and exposing your tattoo. Many cosmetics that are thin enough to be used on the face or other sensitive areas are more than likely not going to give you the protection you need and you should be weary of these.
