Selecting the design for your tattoo
When I got my first tattoo, I had a hard time deciding on what type of design I wanted to be permanently put on my bod. Did I want a cartoon figure, a symbol of some sort, something simple or complex, one color or multi-colored, a small or large tattoo? Decisions, decisions, decisions.
I took my time. I went from tattoo parlor to tattoo parlor looking at their flash. I checked out other people's tattoos. I searched the web, and that's where I found a lot of good information about selecting tattoos, where to place them on your body, etc. The best site I found was Tattoo My Brain which is a membership site that offers a hugh selection of tattoo designs. They have more than 6000 designs in over 30 categories.
When you select your tattoo, be sure you'll LOVE it forever, because that is how long you're going to have it (unless you trade it for an ugly scar). Also make sure it's where you want it on your body. Do you want to be able to cover it up if you need to (like interviewing for a job). Just take your time and don't rush into anything, and please don't get tattooed while you're high on something, you'll surely reget it later.

Think Before You Leap
It's a decision you're going to live with for the rest of your life.
Then you have to consider your life's future with your tattoo. If you have the name of your "true love" tattooed on your arm, what happens if he/she dumps you or you dump them. What do you do with that tattoo when you do really do find the person you want to spend the rest of your life with? Also, if you are angry with the world and think they have dumped all over you and you have "F___ You" tattooed on your forehead, what happens when you get your head screwed on right and wish you hadn't been so stupid. Also when you get tired of having the crap beat out of you by every redneck that sees your "statement" to the world.
Another thing to consider is how will your tattoo and it's placement affect your future employment potential? Will your future boss be prejudiced about tattoos? Some people are very narrow minded when it comes tattoos. Remember, it wasn't very long ago that the only people that had tattoos were sailors, bikers and hoodlums. Think about where you have your tattoo placed. Will you have to wear long sleeves in the summer to cover up your tattoo just to keep your job?
Think long and hard before you go for cheap or free designs. Most of the free flash is garbage and they're not unique or personalized at all. Most people who get the "common" tattoos wish they had looked around a lot more and found one that was original.
If you go with a friend or a group of friends to get your tattoo, don't let them pressure you into quickly choosing a design. Take your time and be sure it "fits" you. You're the one that has to live with it and look at it everyday.
Getting a tattoo is a major decision. Don't get one on a whim or just because everyone else is getting one. Take your time and think through all the implications that are involved with having a tattoo.
